Seriously, though, if you read “Bloom County” you’ll see that the funnies used to have subject matter and language that would be verboten today.

This isn’t satire. These Comic Strip Censors’ uniforms, hats and facial hair are still required under the Comics Code Authority (CCA), to be used “when policing the code of ethics and standards” for the industry, as mandated by the ACMP under authorization of the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency.

I’m not kidding. Comic Strip Censors have to wear top hats and red bow ties when on the job. Have to have Snidely Whiplash mustaches.

Reminds me when Greg Evans was doing a Luann strip years ago, dealing with the subject of Luann starting her menses. He absolutely was not permitted to use the word “period” at all . . . so when Luann whispered to her friend Bernice, Greg did it this way . . . :

I just hope when the Cubs win a pennant, their fans don’t become as insufferable as Red Sox fans have been since they won the Whirled Serious. Even Yankee fans are almost more tolerable these days. Almost.

Thank God for censorship. I always think it’s funnier when they make fun of the censorship itself like in today’s strip
