Gunther: "YOU'RE GOING TO PERU?!" Rosa: "Gunther, I've always lived up to my parents' expectations. I got into Yale, just like they wanted" Rosa: "But it's not what I want! I want more life, not more school. So I'm going to Peru to help at my uncle's clinic. I leave in two weeks. I'm so excited!" Rosa: "But right now, I have to tell my parents. They'll go into shock!"

Weâre seeing some of the cast being pared away. Miss Blips, Fogarty, and now Rosa. Maybe Gunther will follow. Who will be next? It appears we will have more focus on the central characters, Luannâs family, or maybe introduce new characters. That would make sense, to meet new people at college. Iâm just guessing, but I have a feeling Delta, Quill and Tiffany are soon to play a diminished role at best, maybe off to?

I think we need to know what Plan A and Plan B were. One of them probably involved Gunther, and he has let her down on it. Maybe Plan D involves him joining her in Peru!
lynnskay over 10 years ago
So she throws Gunther a hard ball to the gut and walks away happy. Sure, she mentioned Peru a couple times, but she never made it clear that it was a real possibility and that she would (or could) be able to pull it off. She should have been talking to Gunther about the conversations sheâs been having with her uncle. This was not all arranged over night. She can not have as strong a feeling for Gunther as he has for her, or she would not have been so callus with this revelation. This could send him right back into that shell he has not fully emerged from. This may be the right thing for her to do, but she is being very selfish in the way she is treating Gunther. She doesnât deserve him, or anyone else, til she learns how to respect other peoples feelings even while she is doing what she wants and following her own dream.

@ Brdshtt: No, I think Whatmiwori had it right, as âdiesâ is the plural of âdiemâ, and there are two weeks remaining until she leaves. Thatâs how I read it, anyway. Youâre right that the original line is âSeize the dayâ, but my take is that Whatmiwori changed it to âdaysâ for a logical reason here.
I think Rosa is making the right decision for her. I also think she did make things clear to Gunther, but that he wouldnât take her seriously. And unless the Aragones family is a lot more dysfunctional than weâre been shown so far, el tio has, in fact, discussed this with los parentes, whether Rosa was in the room at the time or not.
And she may have read Gunther right, as well, and decided that the best thing for him would be to get loose from his Mom â a lot looser than just going to Moony and staying in the same town would be. Either that, or sheâs hoping Mrs. Berger will decide to emigrate to Peru, and she can set her up with the uncle. Do we know if heâs married?

The fact that Gunther did not pick up on the not-so-subtle hints showed Rosa that he was not ready to hear it, thus she has not laid it out for him. Sheâs waiting for him to realize whatâs happening, and come to a decision without any undue influence on her part. Am I the only one who sees this? If she influences his decision it could produce negative results later.

Sheâs an adult now and theyâd better learn to respect that. But you think that an Hispanic family will allow tradition to be broken? Sheâs got a hard fight against her when she does tell her parents
Pretty much the case for any family, not just Hispanic.
All parents want to keep âcontrolâ of their children for as long as they can. Those 18 or so years as a dependent minor are Heaven to a parent. :-) But when they become legal adults, it doesnât stop there⊠it just evolvesâŠ. into âfinancial control.â The child needs $$$ for college and/or get setup in life and a career, extending the parentâs control even further. Unless youâre a Hollywood Child superstar, youâre still dependent on them. Finally., even after youâre on your own and making a living, your own family, etc., those dastardly parents still have one last financial control trick up their sleevesâŠ. âInheritance.â Ahhhh the things parents will do to keep their clutches over their kidsâŠ. ;-PPP
Point being, Rosa has to hope her risk/benefit calculation is really valid, here. She has to be willing to give up the financing for Yale her parents are providing, and, potentially, any future âfinancing.â I donât believe Guntherâs problem is âfinancing,â since they havenât had much to begin with. Nonetheless, both of them are intelligent and I think can make the appropriate adjustments in lifestyle to become self-sufficient. And who knows⊠by that time, maybe her parents will realize what theyâre missing as well, and come to an understanding with her.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member over 10 years ago
I think Rosa is being quite rash. She âpleased her parents by getting into YaleââŠ. such sillinessâŠ. getting in is NOT what her parentâs desire wasâŠ. it was to have her study and learn there. Going through all the expense of applying and leading her parents on about it is rather selfish in my opinion. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++A more REALISTIC way Rosa should behave is to a) realize that if she wants to work in her uncleâs clinicâŠ. she should plan to earn some sort of health-care focused degree that will give her knowledge to be a real asset to the clinic. SHE SHOULD go to Peru for the Summer to see what it is like, and to help out in other less specialized ways, but truly, if that is her âlife goalâ to work at the clinic in Peru, she should be thinking and planning her future around how to BEST be of service in such a setting.

I donât know when following a dream of getting an engineering PhD ever became the wrong decision. Wow⊠quite the imagination there! Well, if you can dream, then so can I.
I believe Rosa genuinely cares for Gunther, and Iâve seen no evidence to the contrary. And YES, Rosa did try to convey her plans to Gunther, but perhaps a bit too stealthily for him to pick up on. Time will tell, but I think Rosa does want Gunther along on thisâŠ. and I think he should go. He can always return to complete his degree plans and fulfill his dream. But this is an opportunity of a lifetime. I hope he takes it.

I think Rosa knows exactly what kind of affect this announcement will have on Gunther and I think she does know it will blind side him.
Rosa seems a very thoughtful young woman, very introspective. In the transliterated Greek it is called âgnĆthi seautonâ meaning âKnow thyself.â She is choosing what she wants, and this is always the best choice.
From what I know about Gunther and Rosa from reading this strip all these years is that this is a split in their relationship, one that Rosa has defined and set in motion for a purpose. If you love someone let them go.
Now its Guntherâs choice. It wonât be an easy choice for him, but in the end, I think he will be true to himself as well.

âBut you think that an Hispanic family will allow tradition to be broken?â^I get your point, but thatâs not totally accurate to say theyâd be staunch traditionalists because of their cultureâŠ. we are Hispanic (from my fatherâs side) and he has never compelled us to keep any traditions, nor had my grandfatherâŠ. moreover, strong traditions reside within all cultures, but some choose to either âbreak with traditionâ, change it some, or just arenât as interested in them as those before them⊠â And secondly, it may not be an actual tradition for the Aragones (Rosaâs family) here, just more so their own âexpectationsâ or even âdreamsâ for their daughterâŠ.

What part did I imagine? The part where theyâve done nothing but kiss a few times? The part where Gunther and Rosa have never discussed their summer plans, because if they had, Rosa would have told him about Plan C months ago?
She DID discuss it with Gunther. At least she tried to. Gunther may not have been paying attention. Refer to IamJayBlueâs post above for the specifics. As for the kissing, thatâs all weâve seen them do. We may not have seen anything else theyâve done. Like is say⊠âimagination.â
He can always go to Peru and work at a clinic after he finishes his degree.
A little harder to do in that order, than the reverse. By the time heâs done with his degree, heâll be so in debt heâll have to work for 10+ years to pay it off. Heâll be lucky if he gets to go to Tijuana, let alone Peru. He may have a golden opportunity, right here, right now, that may never come again. He needs to take it.
There are lots of reasons for wanting Gunther to go to Peru. You are bored of Gunther, you donât like Gunther, you think Rosa is the only girl heâs ever going to get, you want to see Evans draw things in Peru, etc. But to say Gunther going is the ârightâ choice, and staying in America to get his degree is the âwrongâ choice isnât fair.
Of course, itâs fair! We are all entitled to our own imaginations and opinions based on them. And you donât need to tell me what I think about Gunther or any other character. I actually do like Gunther. I want only the best for him. He and I are much alike in many respects. As such, I donât want him to make some of the mistakes I did. When life hands someone like Gunther an opportunity like this, they should take it.
Thereâs no right or wrong choice, I just want the story to make it believable
And again, âbelievabilityâ is in the eyes/imagination of the beholder. I believe it is possible.
Their relationship does not seem solid enough.
Perhaps, not now, but whoâs to say the trip to Peru canât strengthen it? I think the progress Rosa has made with Gunther already is encouraging. And I would encourage more.
Look, we all choose to believe what we wish. No one but Mr. Evans knows whatâs in the cards for any of the characters. In the end, itâs really his call. But until that reveal, Iâm rooting for Gunther and Rosa to be successful, if only for the summer. I actually hope itâs a little longer than that. If Lu and Gunther are truly destined for each other, eventually, then both need to have a couple of relationships under their respective belts before taking each other on, if they desire any kind of positive long term outcome. Right now, neither have the experience & maturity for it.

Gunther and Rosa can both find mates who are better suited for them than are each other. This âromanceâ (actually, just casual dating) would have fallen apart this fall anyway, when Rosa went to Yale and Gunther went to Moony. The only reason this relationship ever happened at all is that there were so few dating options available to them at Pitts, given that this stripâs curious self-imposed rules require that all but about 10 of the 500 students in their graduating class remain as shadow people.-So, itâs time for Rosa to buy a one-way ticket to South America and get a job in a clinic on the flanks of an erupting volcano. Gunther can simply disappear back into the Gunther basement once he enrolls at Moony, and Luann can go on to be part of a whole new cast of Pitt CC students this fall.

It would be a thoroughly ridiculous plot development for Gunther to follow Rosa to Peru. However, I am afraid that the story may in fact be headed in exactly that direction, merely as a contrivance for writing Gunther out of the cast. Itâs fine by me if he is dropped from the strip, but it should be for a far more realistic reason in which he pursues his dream, not Rosaâs. Let him spend all his time pursuing his studies at Moony and simply not have a reason to interact with Luann any more, or if he absolutely has to move away to leave the strip, then let him win a scholarship to study fashion design or textile engineering or pretty much anything else, at some college in the Midwest. It would be far better for his departure from the strip to be for some believable reason rather than to move to South American just to pursue a girl whom he has dated only casually as a high-school romance.

They ones I think will still be in the strip in one year from now are:
My List:
1) The DeGroot Family (which hopefully includes Toni & Shannon, by then);
2) Whomever is going to Moony Uni (Bernice, Tiff, Q, etc.) with maybe one exception :-)
3) Some of the Pitts HS gang (Knute, Crystal, TJ) now at either WW or Cafe TJ.

Is anyone considering the possibility that âout of townâ doesnât necessarily mean âout of the stripâ? I can think of more than one comic strip where various arcs involve characters in different parts of the world. Granted, Greg hasnât done this so far (that I know of, anyway) but itâs not impossible. We could still have story arcs taking place at Moony, other arcs at community college, even see Knute making new friends at the homeless shelter. We could see students who go to different schools getting together on weekends or during breaks.
Iâm not persuaded that just because certain people wonât be in the same school any more means that weâll never see them again. Delta, for example, isnât really around all that much now. When she does appear, she often has lines that could be spoken by any cardboard cutout. She could âbe atâ Howard University but still show up two or three times a year during âspring breakâ or something. TJ, if I recall correctly, used to be in classes with Brad, which suggests he graduated a while ago and is now out in the world somewhere.
I donât predict that Greg will send Gunther off to Peru, I just think he should. It would be a healthy, maturing experience for the poor, sheltered hothouse flower. And my main point here is that I donât think sending (him and) Rosa off to Peru for a while necessarily means theyâre off to Aaron-Hill-land for ever and ever. At this point, Greg has invested a great deal of character development in both of them, much more than he ever did with Aaron, Ben or the little Elvis-looking guy.

What bothers me is having Gunther behave in a totally implausible way. contrary to everything that has been established about the character, simply in order to write him out of the strip. There would be plenty of good ways of making Gunther disappear, such as simply not seeing him any more once he goes to Moony and Luann goes to Pitt CC. However, the Evans formula is to sent characters to Spain, Hawaii, Australia, or now Peru, in order to get rid of them, no matter how unbelievable the circumstances or the rationale. Thatâs simply lazy writing.

I know what you mean in reference to P.G. âŠBut OTOH, it did make the first version of the group unique and there was some classic material in his involvement..⊠â Also a crazy thing is that he still had songs from âTop 40â going, even though he wasnât a âpopâ artist in the traditional senseâŠ.

Also, âFlowergirlâ, if you didnât get the chance, I responded to your response from âyestiddyâ (with some additional ways to bring up the characters)âŠ

Last time, he had him roll down a hillâŠ. â Would love to see what âexerciseâ he uses to help Gunther out, ,this timeâŠ..

If Quill sets him straight, it will be to tell him that he would be nuts to go to Peru to follow his kind-of girlfriend instead of staying at Moony Uni and getting his engineering degree.

Yeah, I got that oneâŠ. and responded yesterday how it was âcomic goldââŠI used the word âfunnyâ instead, though⊠â And in addition, Iâll add today that it included the tag line from that classic commercial!

Gunther would be making a profound mistake that he will regret for the rest of his life, if he is not attending Moony Uni this fall. And frankly, Rosa would be making a big mistake in her life too if she allows him to follow her to Peru. These people had a high school crush, and now itâs time to put that aside and move on to the next big thing in both their lives. They can both find partners who are better suited for them, in the months and years to come.

And in addition, there are certain genes shared by us all (including shared heritages) that some are either âunaware ofâ, or choose to remain âunaware ofâ⊠sometimes, people like to âoverlookâ how close they really are to those they consider of âsome other ethnic group/race/cultureââŠ..

Ah, the short sightedness of youth. And I donât mean Guntherâs myopia.
