Frazz by Jef Mallett for June 25, 2014
Transcript:
boy: The plan is to have an epic freak-out on the Mackinac Bridge. Frazz: Oh, my. boy: Right. But plan B is to not freak out. Which will impress my folks way more than the original plan they were expecting. Frazz: So plan A is to go straight to plan B. boy: First casualty of war is plan A!

I was crossing the Mackinac Bridge from the UP with two other soldiers, on the way to Grayling to work with the Michigan National Guard. One of them being a tanker and the other an infantryman. Anyway, long story short the tanker was freaking out and lay down on the floor in the back before we even got on the bridge. Wouldn’t sit up until we were on terra firma downstate.

So Frazz is set in Michigan? Well, as an Ohio native, I am not happy……………………………………..

What is the word the local folks use to describe those who are afraid to drive over it?? I watched an interesting segment on this bridge on the CBS Morning Show decades ago.

Last time I crossed that bridge was on a motorcycle… in the left lane (the one that’s steel grating rather than pavement)… looking down. It’s a pretty cool sensation.

Puddleglum, I refuse to drive on the that grating…Way too creepy….After crossing one time, my bike rack fell off on Highway 2 a few minutes later. I can’t imagine what it would be like if it had happened in the center of the bridge….I would have had to get out of the car…I did walk across it on Labor Day one time though….

Great bridge in a beautiful state.

I live about 3000 miles from Michigan, but have been across the Mackinac once, driving a 34’ Winnebago towing a 15’ car in a howling cross wind. Can’t think of any reason to ever do that again.

Is this Mallett’s attempt at drawing an Asian child? I certainly hope not.

Every time we crossed the bridge (by car), the kids would always try holding our breath all the way across. Mom and Dad encouraged it. Kept us quiet for five miles at least.

People who cross the bridge from South to North are called Trolls because they live beneath the bridge.
