I’m surprised that she talked to a living person, period!

When I was Ruthie’s age I wanted to be a telephone operator when I grew up, but my dad told me that by that time they wouldn’t have operators. My first job out of high school was as a service rep for C&P; there were precious few operators, and they were all older women. However, there were still Information operators for a long time.

“Ernestine” the telephone operator: One ringy dingy… two ringy dingy. Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking?

    It’s a rip-off if you’re a Latin American gato. You only get 7 lives!

I remember having to go thru an operator to find a friend of mine to tell him a older friend of his had passed away. All I had was his name and the town I last heard he lived it. We found him. The operator was so nice. Fortunately it was a small town in West Virginia and not a large city like Chicago. LOL

It’s cost me a whole buncha bux, but a plaintive call from CA and a ‘lost dotter’ hoping that I was her dad got me interested in genealogy.. Eventually, I found her dad, got them connected and ever since then, I’ve become the family name expert.. Jeez.. Who knew??

I remember when our telephone was on a party line and the phone rang in multiple rings. We only answered if it rang two rings at a time, and sometimes the other party would listen in on your calls.
