Are the two golfers supposed to be famous people? Thompson’s level of artistic talent has never been up to the challenge of depicting well-known faces. I assume the pun has to do with the identity of the players, but I haven’t got a clue on this one.
@Claymore: the pun is “putting”. And those are awesome Calvin and Hobbes covers for the woods. Which can’t be authentic, right? Because Watterson’s contract stipulates no merchandising.
Let’s see. There must be a way to make sense of this without resorting to that pathetic pun. Okay. Here goes..Calvin and Hobbes club head covers. Golfer named John. Who may represent John Calvin, the 16th century theologian for whom Calvin the comic strip character was named (really). He’s playing golf, invented in the 13th century. But it was originally played to hit the ball through doors, not into holes. So a 16th century golfing theologian naturally has a weak putting game.

What’s the point of the turtle? The implication is that the guy can’t actually hit the ball in the hole until the turtle reaches the hole? Huh? And no one has commented that the man’s pants exactly match the turtle’s shell – Huh?
Both my time machine and magic wand are in the shop, or else I’d have rationalized English spelling beyond what Webster was able to do (no more draught, colour, defence, etc.) But I’ve never been able to decide how to resolve PUTTING on the green and PUTTING on the Ritz. Maybe when they make me King of English.
What? Nobody noticed Poncho from “Pooch Cafe” on John Glynn’s (middle guy) shirt?Who’s John Glynn? He’s one of the Powers-That-Be at GozComics, you know, that guy you curse at when something goes wrong at GC.
Thanks, x_Tech and Chris Tanner… yes, John Glynn is the editorial director here at GoComics…. very powerful position.I think he’s also now the company president.
I’ve seen other cartoonists work him into strips as well. And all the artists here must bow before him…. er… well…or maybe let him win on the golf course…. at least once a month.
And John McMeel is half of Andrews/McMeel, parent of Universal UClick…. Truly one of the Head Honchos…. hey, is that why he’s wearing Poncho?
John Glynn probably has to let HIM win… and of course so does Dan.
One of the lamest “jokes” ever, even for a cartoon that is based on lameness. Does he need to suck up to the boss that bad that he has to include someone the average reader has no clue about? Maybe it’s time to drop this one from my subscription. Also, could there be possible copyright infringement issues by depicting recognizable Calvin and Hobbes figures?

I guess he didn’t have much fore-thought… a little birdie must have told him he had a better chance that way….

Besides Calvin and Hobbes, also note Poncho (from Pooch Cafe) on the white vest.

Or maybe just put him in the strip. :)

Oops! Chris, you’re right.
In my zeal for any wordplay at all, I misspoke!
I DO call Dan’s putting/putting a pun, BTW.
