    Hold on, hold onā€¦

DT actually gets to fire his weapon!?

    ON PURPOSE!?

In the direction of a living being!?

Who are you and what have you done with our comic strip?

I do see what Sydneyā€™s been saying about the angle of Virgilā€™s gun. For the bulletā€™s trajectory to match from yesterday to today, Virgil would have to have been on his knees when he pulled the trigger.

Please excuse me if I appear to be thick But why is Virgil poking sonny with a stick Tracy pulls his trusty gun And shoots sonny just for fun With rumpled suit and tousled hair He displays a certain flair His detective skills were not much use For which he received well deserved abuse But hopefully the story is winding down Maybe after this heā€™ll leave town.

Amid all the celebrations I just noted looking at the line-of-flight of the bullet, it seems Vergil fired from the HIP (?)

Yesterday, as the gun went ā€œPOWā€ it was under his chin, and pointing upward The positions and results simply donā€™t match.

As for the sound ā€œBLAMā€, Iā€™d guess Brozman got tired of writing ā€œPOWā€, a softer, gentler sound Locher uses to ease the harshness of gun fighting to appease TMS and a few left wing Moms.

Persons being shot once with a handgun not at point blank range have an approximately 70% chance of living through the injury. My son, on the other hand was shot to death by a robber wielding a shotgun. Please tell me how handgun laws will make any place safer? The two shooters at Columbine High School broke 16 different state and federal gun laws in their spree of ignorance. How many more gun laws would it have taken to stop them if 16 didnā€™t? (stepping down off of my soapbox)

I realize this was a bit of a non-sequitur, but I believe Jr could easily survive the shooting. Virgil Ohso also , unless it was Barnaby Jones who really fired the shot from behind Dick Tracyā€™s back, because when Barnaby Jones shoots, someone dies.

This tragedy could have engendered great pathos (as it should) had there not been so many comedic blunders in the same strip

A ā€˜Jerky-porkā€™ art style started with the line of the bullet, an elbow length arm in panel 2 growing OUT of the shoulder socket and an unconvincing DEMEANOR on the fatherā€™s facs.

They all add up to a failure in achieving the deep feeling of sorrow - one believes the Author intended

    Nothing more than a nervous ā€œhalf laughā€ !

Does the syndicate allow Dick to shoot his gun if most of it is out of frame? How much of it has to be out of frame? 70%? 80%?

The funny pages would look quite different if everybody framed their drawings like Locher & Brozman. Art museums, too. Imagine Washington Crossing the Delaware ā€“ with most of Washington cut off by the frame. Imagine Picassoā€™s Three Musicians ā€“ 2 1/8 Musicians.

Looks like Virgil crouched down to squat on the sidewalk between yesterday & today, so of course he has to aim upward, and Dick has to aim downward, which you see heā€™s doing. Canā€™t fault him there.

Of course Virgil was standing upright and holding his gun high when it started to go POW yesterday ā€“ so he must be able to move amazingly fast to squat down before the bullet exited the muzzle. Very fast indeed, since even a relatively low velocity pistol round has a muzzle velocity close to the speed of soundā€¦. With moves like that, we can expect Virgil to dodge Dickā€™s bullet with ease. He could run circles around it.

There is nothing the matter with the drawing of Tracyā€™s arm in the middle panel.

It is, after all, an example of small arms fire.

Back in the old days of Dick Tracy comics, Dick used to shoot criminals all the time - and theyā€™d show the bullets meandering out the other side of the criminalsā€™ bodies. Guess thatā€™s not PC enough for todayā€™s readers.
