Actually, for those wondering, Luann __did_ pretty much know Aaron, but it was even before 10… as evidenced in these two strips from a “flashback/prequel” around 10/2003… –
Within the strip’s publication, Luann didn’t have a love interest before Aaron Hill. She was established as already having a crush on him during the very first week of the strip, Aaron was depicted in the strip before Delta or Tiffany or even Nancy.
I welcome seeing Jonathan Upchurch’s drawing style, but I wish we weren’t spending a week on grade-school “flashbacks” (especially so soon after the marathon of flashbacks for Fogarty’s retirement.) Maybe we could have spent this first week of Luann’s adulthood fantasizing about her life 10 or 20 years in the future, instead of 8 years in the past? That would allow the different art style to work just as well as this “memory book” does.
Sorry to disappoint you, but he already stated in an interview that he has no plans to bring Aaron back, (as shown in minute 31:00 of the Q&A in this link …
If Jonathan Upchurch really likes the Aaron Hill character, perhaps he can persuade Greg Evans to bring him back. I think Aaron is a more interesting suitor for Luann than is Quill, who seems pretty much devoid of personality.
OK, for whatever reasons, this strip, completely drawn by Mr. Upchurch, is looking really good. I can see his own style in it as well as the general character styles. I look forward to seeing his rendition of the “current day” characters.
And, no, let’s not bring back Aaron. Lu needs to stay on track… get her life in order, and resolve Quill, once and for all. Either way doesn’t matter, but resolve the relationship.
And @BS, I see what you mean about “Andy Capp” and the lower jaws, from today’s AC strip. :-)))
Greg, if you’re reading this…………BRING AARON HILL BACK AND LETS SEE SOME LUANN’S BOYFRIENDS RIVALRY DEATH MATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^^Good idea, they can kill each other, then Gunther can come back and take what should have been his all along (Luann).
What about hyacinths, it’s not spring without my hyacinths blooming around the yard? Personally I’m allergic to fragrances with reactions ranging from sneezing to my throat closing, with the occasional skin reaction
@Meh~thodology-Can’t use the reply function to respond to you.-Great post about the Dez behind the curtain. And morale (if measured by posts) will probably continue to decline as long as flashbacks are the only feature. Don’t get me wrong; I have no quarrel with the guest artist. I just wish he was given free rein to speculate about the future…
“I hate perfume. I prefer no smells at all. The only aromas I like are (vegetarian) food cooking and the lilac bushes in spring.”*Clark – I had a friend in high school who wore food flavorings (vanilla, orange, almond, etc.). I occasionally do it now, rather than the manufactured stuff.
Please realize that I am not against Jonathan drawing the comic. I think he can and could do an excellent job if needed. However, now after two days of the new drawings, I must say that I REALLY WOULD PREFER the drawing style of the characters to be more in keeping with they way they have looked during the last 2-3 years. I think Greg did some substantial transformations with Brad, Luann, Bernice, and others that give them a very modern, appropriate, and yet very distinctive look for today. I realize that perhaps some of Jonathan’s work is harkening back to Greg’s earlier style to a degree because it is a flashback to when they were all much younger. However, in my manner of thinking, I suspect that Jonathan could have made the characters look more like they did back then than he actually did. With that idea, I am a little nervous that if/when Jonathan does eventually draw them as adults…. if he uses the same sorts of parameters he has now chosen, the adult versions will become just as cartoonEY…. what I mean is they will be less desirable versions of their current images.
Quill is boring, and Greg Evans was right to ship him off to Australia for that reason (although the whole “phone call just in the nick of time” scenario that brought this about was so outrageous that it’s a wonder he had the audacity to do it). Bringing Quill back was Karen’s idea, to show that Luann is capable of long-term commitment. OK, she’s shown that, so it’s time to get rid of Quill again, because he’s a boring character and his relationship with Luann has nowhere to go.
You guys are J-E-A-L-O-U-S!*Admit it, Quill is cute and Aaron is cuter. You just wished 8-18 year-old girls fawned over you. At that age, cuteness is everything.*But not to worry. We older hags appreciate your inner beauty. (Aside from Nancy, who reportedly is a cougar.)
This here has already been covered in the olden days of “Luann” and we already have “Luann Againn.” At least the characters look pretty cute as drawn by the grandson.
I think it is nice to see Luann and the others at age 10. At age 10, I had a boyfriend who gave me a box of candy hearts for Valentine’s Day and a troll doll, which was a popular doll at the time. You can’t underestimate the love of a ten year old. Luann is doing what most girls do at that age, and so is Tiffany. Most girls have gotten a playset that included scents by age 10. Bernice was deprived, and she didn’t even know it.
Yes, Aaron was a non-entity for many years. He seemed very innocent of all boy-girl things..BUTThen he became more interesting. Knew who Luann was.But Tiffany was always all over him. He was attracted to Tiff some. Not clear how much..For a while, Aaron paid a bit of attention to Luann. They wrote together, joked, got locked in the library. There seemed to be some chance for Luann with Aaron..He summers in Maine. - Has a deaf girlfriend there.Luann thinks she is fictional. Why would he invent such a girlfriend? Does Luann think that Aaron is inventing a bogus girlfriend to insulate himself from her?Later Luann is surprised to learn the girl is real.Aaron has even bothered to learn sign language. But rather soon, the deaf girl dumps Aaron. Not clear why..Luann even had some dates with Aaron. Situations usually odd.Nancy was angry once because Aaron did not kiss Luannwhen he brought her home from a date. Luann was worried about it.Yet they become a sort of couple, but only more or less friends — at least it seems. Luann would like more. Then Aaron gets deeply entangled (secretly) with a much older girl, Diane.Maybe he was seduced by her? Not clear.Luann finds them out.The mutual feeling is that he has sort of “cheated on” Luann..Then he goes off to Hawaii.Luann see him there, but he turns up with a Chinese girlfriend. He seems apologetic to Luann, which makes little sense if they had no commitment..He later tells Luann by e-mail that he has broken up with the Chinese girl, not clear why. Did she dump him?.Aaron tries to contact Luann by e-mail. She is fed up with him.Yet she still has the occasional dream about him..So Aaron was not so boring a character. Attracts females. Has his defects. Not clear exactly what.
I like the new art style. While it is clearly a different style from the original art, the characters can still be recognized..He actually made Tiffany look cute… and I have never thought she looked cute the way she has been drawn before, with that helmet hair.
LOL! – And other things that changed about him: He has a very timid Great Dane, two girls who follow a tall blonde guy aroun- oh, wait….sounds like his old life ….
This goes to prove that Tiffany is the kind of person who is not afraid to do something that many of us want to but are afraid that we will be criticized for. Good for Tiffany!
It depends on their date of birth, too. Some turn 9 late in third grade, some are 9 before it starts. Some even “skip ahead” a year early (though of course not everyone has that scenario)…..
I like today’s strip. Clearly Jonathan has been doing his homework, because the characters are well- and consistently drawn. So far, Jonathan’s doing better than some professional and published cartoonists I could name (but wont.;) ) As for Aaron Hill… I hate to admit it, but he reminds me of my Jr. High crush. I’m sure he was a bright and interesting enough guy, but I never got to see much of it because he wasn’t interested in me. Aaron Hill may well have had many great characteristics – besides those dreamy eyes and that cute haircut – that we never got to see because he knew how strong Luann’s interest in him was, so he kept his distance as much as he could.

Why not make them 13, so this would actually be believable? I don’t know why 10 years old was chosen.
