Too bad for Jason that Patrick Stewart is English, not Irish.

And by the way, Picard himself was French, Jason (despite the fact that an Englishman played him!)

For Jason, the connection with Patrick is enough

As for me: I’m just happy that the holiday granted the opportunity for me to try a beer I haven’t tried before, and on sale…

Still no explanation for Marcus in a wheel chair. Or did Patrick Stewart play a role in some other show as a man in a wheel chair?

Professor Xavier Charles is a mutant with superior mental abilities who is the leader of the X-Men. Unfortunately, he is confined to a wheelchair.

Patrick Stewart deserves his own holiday for making Picard the best Captain Star Fleet ever produced (so far). At least they didn’t dress up as starfish to honor Sponge Bob’s sidekick.

    WillowsDreaming,

That “Moldy Old Saint” was responsible for converting Ireland to Christianity, without the loss of a SINGLE Martyr, the only country in the history of the WORLD to do so.

While there WERE Irish Martyrs who died in missionary expeditions to “re-Christianize” the European continent, during the Dark Ages, the adoption of Christianity without ANY Martyrs is considered to be an evidence of God’s hand at work in Ireland’s acceptance of the Faith.

St. Patrick was British, when Britannia was part of the Roman Empire.

A: St. Patty got to be a St. cause he drove the snakes from Ireland (Legends being all truth as the beer flies.) I believe he may have cured a potato famine as well, but that might be blarney. B: St Patrick is indeed a play on Mr. Stewart’s name. C: It’s Charles Xavier, not Xavier Charles, Professor X, wheelchair bound and brain powered. Mr. Stewart seems no longer to play the part since he was atomized in the movie. Jason would never have liked the movie since it botched up the entire X legend. I believe Xavier could have driven out snakes if he wished, though he may have not been able to after celebrating St. Pat’s…Sorry, Bilt, Janeway long surpassed Picard, breaking the temporal prime directive, wiping out Borg queens, shutting down their “corridors” and getting her team home on time, even birthing an alien race in accelerated evolution plus discovering 7 of 9. (Not THIS is an argument worthy of Jason and every nerd who never grew up.)

I must be from another generation. Not one comment made any sense to me and neither did the strip. I do know the history of St. Patrick in Ireland, but don’t think there ever were snakes there before he came to drive them out.

Picard would have driven all the snakes out of Ireland by having Geordi and Data realign the phase inverters, run a level 5 diagnostic and then shooting a tachyon beam from the main deflector. Its a well known fact snakes hate tachyons.

if Capt Archer from Enterprise has tried this though there is a good chance the snakes would have beaten him up as he seemed to get pounded by someone or something every episode.

St. Patrick could not have “cured” a potato famine. Ireland didn’t have potatoes in his time. Potatoes were not in Europe until the Europeans started exploring the New World.

Potatoes arrived in Spain, from Peru, in 1565 and by 1600 had spread throughout Europe. St Patrick was by this time quite moldy and unlikely to have cured anything.

In South America St Peter is the patron of potato farmers

St Patricks connection to Potatoes is the belief that in order to give the crop time to grow you Should have the seeds planted by St Patrick’s day

I guess you could pray to him to to keep em healthy as well.

I remember that role…now. Great role. What about his role in “Dune”? Gurney Halleck, I think, my second-favorite character from the book after Paul Muab’dib and Paul’s right-hand man in many ways.

    As for Star Trek, ahem…

Captain Kirk (“the one and only”) was never surpassed by any captain that followed him, including Cpt. Janeway. He saved the Earth and the Federation more times than all the other Famous Captains combined; he also traveled in time more than any of them. When he was taken out of the timeline, the claim that no man in history had been more influential was proven by the results of the change (cf. ST: Of Gods and Men, a “must see” fan film in which a number of veteran actors from the franchise participated).

Which is not to say I don’t appreciate each and every one of the Famous Captains for their unique personalities, gifts and contributions - none could be removed from the timeline without disasterous results. :)

No, it still exists http://www.foxtrot.com/2010/03/03212010/ It’s not updated on the Boston Globe site, either, so there’s probably a problem with the feed. That said, I don’t understand it. It feels like an Apple user inside joke.
