I hope those boxes of medication contain something to help both of them once they arrive at the clinic in the high-altitude mountain village: an inhaler for Gunther’s asthma, and a downer for Rosa’s mania.
As soon as they leave town, the clinic’s computer network will crash, and its phones will go unanswered, leaving the patients in panic. These are two very irresponsible young people. Shame on them both,
To be honest this strip is going is circles and its getting irritating. This is just what happened when Gunther and Rosa went to Peru. Rosa was excited while Gunther was scared. Then when they arrived Rosa didn’t like it because she expected it to be better . Now it looks like it is about to happen again. :(
Gunther has been pretty adaptable before, in the prom storyline, and in deciding to go to Peru in the first place. I think he’s the natural product of growing up in a fairly sheltered home environment — but he’s risen to every challenge so far. I think he’s coming to terms with his background and realizing that he’s got a lot more on the ball than he ever knew. He’ll cope.
I worry that Rosa is appearing more and more self-absorbed, and doesn’t seem to be paying much attention to how Gunther is taking all this. I don’t doubt that it’s good for him, but I’m less sure of her intentions and perspective. She was overjoyed when Gunther said he was going, but she doesn’t seem to notice (or care?) what he’s going through.
I enjoy the G&R strips and the ones with Brad & Toni, where the characters seem to actually be growing. I get kind of tired of Lu, Bern, and the rest of the home town crowd who really do seem to be school-children who have outgrown twelfth grade without maturing much, if at all.
Well, Quill, maybe. Kind of. And I’ll bet he’s already rehearsing the break-up speech he’ll use on Luann some day, when it’s just too painfully obvious that he’s years more grown-up than she is, whatever their respective ages.
I can see Rosa singing this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG0t7qX9stY and Gunther thinking this way right now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVDfHBxGPOs but he will end up singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me4Ai7Zj2tA

you can’t stand seeing characters superior to you? or is there a reason you hate seeing the reverse of the beauty and the beast, or of Aladdin and the princess?
Irish Setters are smart ! IS Katie knows when it is her bedtime…she’s been lying on the couch down here, and is now bugging me to do something ! Which translates to “it is time to go to bed!!!” And, I’d just come back from my journeys around GoComics…she knows, she knows !!! Can set my clock by her! LOL! Anyway, it is both hers and my time to say ’Nite all! ;)-——————————————————————-“O world invisible, we view thee, O world intangible, we touch thee, O world unknowable, we know thee, Inapprehensible, we clutch thee! (Francis Thompson, 1859-1907)
I lived in Denver, don’t remember experiencingshortness of breath at any time, but I did feel iton an occasional day trip to Central City, which is another 3000 ft elevation.
I’m betting that Rosa will find it is not what she’s expecting.Like when the first came down..How Gunther plays into that realization will be interesting.I’m not saying she’ll drop him, just realize how important he is to her.
Good morning all, and congratulations to United Space Alliance and NASA! We are back in space! Delta 4 Heavy Rocket launched the unmanned Orion for its trial in deep space! And what great pics of that launch!-How beautifully ironic that Rosa said ‘We are free at last to spread our wings’, because once again, the US is free to continue our quest in space, without having to rely on another nation to carry our astronauts. -Funny also that yesterday Gunther said he felt like he was going to Mars; maybe in our lifetimes (surely his) that trip is now possible. Who knows, maybe that’s what Gunther will end up doing?-Right now, of course, while Rosa excitedly opens her arms to the next phase of an adventure, Gunther sits with his arms tightly at his sides, hemmed in by boxes of supplies. But it need not always be thus…
Oh LOOK! Gunther SPINELESSLY Goes Along With Rosa’s Bidding! Didn’t See THAT One Coming! (Rolls Eyes)Have FUN Being a Unwitting Victim in the Unforgiving, Forbidden Jungles of Pe-Ru, “Tool”.
Mere high schoolers, these excellent students have earned a gap year to learn some things. Rosa’s unbridled enthusiasm may get curbed, but she’ll learn and it will lead her to opportunities and accomplishments. Gunth old boy, I am hard on you. But your lesson better be to learn to overcome your insecurities and fears to unleash those talents. The world needs them. Rosa, I don’t believe, can live with someone so self-obsessive. Spread your wings Gunther!
It seems to me that the driver wouldn’t be allowed to take anyone that wasn’t authorized. Pretty sure they will be shortly missed at the office and will be called back and sent home. So much for Rosa’s idealism.I actually think she’s being quite foolish and not aware of how this could backfire.
I still think Rosa is just a spoiled child who has never been financially responsible for herself. With her it is a one way street. She would leave Gunther flat in a minute if he said he wanted her to go home with him and go to school. Gunther, living for the moment is great, but do that after you get your college degree in engineering or IT, or whatever so you can take care of yourself – I guess Rosa’s family is paying your way now by giving you the job, hopefully with a paycheck,
I would really like to see Luann in a college classroom and confirming that she is getting her required courses out of the way when she finally decides what to do with her life.
I think Gunther will put his all into the volunteer work once he relaxes. His background is volunteer work. Remember when he delivered library books to Ms. Horton? No pay. Helping others. That is Gunther. So go, Gunther!!!
my goodness, ReallyBad2,your scenarios may be realistic- to a point, but why focus on the bad? If we all stayed Status Quo, and never took a risk, we would still be living in caves.
I agree. One may not be prolific or qualified as an IT repair tech, but one can be good at troubleshooting certain issues that come up that don’t involve actually “digging inside” of equipment, or having “admin permissions”. Ranging from being able to know how to perform certain software functions ( not everyone knows how to optimize their Excel use ) to how to get the printers to print out a doc in just the size and format you’re looking for, among other things…– Sort of how some people know how to “unstick” the vending machine, without causing an accident, or how get “ol’ Betsy” to spit out the right amount of copies/faxes….
I can see them ending this arc the same way they ended the arc with them flying to Peru. Rosa comfortable, Gunther clutching the armrests. Check out the flying to Peru final frame.
If you insist on classifying someone who is an idealist and wants to help others as ‘selfish’, I hope for your sake you never need any help with anything. You may, ya see, need to rely on someone who takes a risk and gives you CPR, even though it makes them late for work, or even though they run the risk of being sued by your survivors of you don’t make it.-Your constant harping on how everyone would condemn one character if she abandoned her job to go help others (which you call ‘an adventure’, and those who feel called to help may consider ‘a mission’) overlooks the distinct possibility that the character you are defending is probably never likely to be drawn to a ‘do-gooder’ mission that would require her to stop modeling, or whatever…- Never mind. You are determined to regard idealists and do-gooders as evil doers. That’s just your loss. I hope they will continue to try to help others.
Hmmmmm. Babes in the woods (…er, mountains) Aren’t the mountains in Peru the habitation of this terrorist guerilla group known as the SHINING PATH? Wouldn’t they love to get their hands on a gringo like Gunther, and what could they do with two impressionable young kids like this? I fear for them. This may be a comic strip, but Greg cannot ingnore this element of Peruvian mountain life.
Remember when their intention was to help the needy in Peru all along? Remember that? Huh? Now watch Guntie suddenly realizes he doesn’t want to join Rosa in helping the needy in Peru.-It only took several weeks or months….Good thinking, Guntie!
according to map of Rosa, they would not go to the high peaks, and if it is around mazamari area, they would be around 2200 to 2500 feet elevation, Denver elevation is 5200, where they going is most probably slightly higher than Las Vegas, slightly lower than Tucson, Arizona
Rosa is a typical starry-eyed do-gooder. Soon enough we will see whether she can handle the real deal up there in that mountain village. Gunther has always been a worrywart, full of foreboding, who usually rises to the occasion in the end. Rosa and Gunther tend to fill each other’s deficiencies. I wish them well.
Of course they are going to be fired. She came to volunteer in a village and that is what she intends to do. Nothing to do with her uncle’s clinic for rich people.
Suppose the delivery van gets involved in an accident, and the passengers are seriously injured or killed. You don’t think Uncle Leo would care about being held liable?
I was a lot like Gunther when I was a teen. One day, years later, I signed up for a mission in Kenya to help build a youth center in the slums. For several months, I was shaking in my shoes just thinking about the impending trip; I had visions of the plane crashing in the ocean. But I made up my mind that I was going on this trip and if this was the way I died, so be it. It was such an incredible adventure, I became addicted to international travel/adventure. I’ve even been to one of the jungle cities in Peru to work in a make-shift medical clinic. We flew from Lima to Puccalpa because it is very dangerous to make the drive. I hope Gunth and Rosa are not mugged or kidnapped on the way.
http://oi62.tinypic.com/xeev75.jpg the purple line shows more or less the area that is 6 hours away from Lima, the red circles show the areas with “peaks”, the one at the bottom(and still north of Cuzco) is relative, as is surrounded by lower parts yet is about same height as most of the black circle area which has “lower elevation parts” that makes those area relatively more mountainous than what surrounds it, and that black circle area is the area where is more likely that the village is at
lot of “Barrios” in Tijuana “look” like mountain villages I made an image showing same village in 3 different positions in the mountain range, all 3 would be mountain villages http://oi61.tinypic.com/2r6fhph.jpg
heidi technically they do(max is about 62MPH or 100 KM per hour) but they are not enforced, lot of drivers go as fast as 120 MPH on the bigger highways
I’ve known a few people who went on short term mission trips with a little trepidation, and loved the experience so much they ended up doing it as a career.
Yeah! – Funny thing, they just played it on the “Music Choice” (all songs, no videos) channel the other day! I used it to make sure my TV was outputting stereo…
