While Jim is feral, he doesn’t seem to have turned into a raccoon per se. He’s murderous, focused and on the hunt. Maybe this is what humans become, when unable to compensate for being in an animal-like body.
Jim’s practically rabid. I don’t think he has anything on his mind other than ripping and tearing anything that comes within reach. If he IS attracted to that little opening, and gets in with Wally, it’ll be one bloody match.
Our motor pool consisted of about a dozen M113’s in various states of operation, all diesel, 3 M48’s 2 of which were on the DL and a rickety M42 to pull us out trouble, which was often. All of it was surplus from Vietnam, "A “gift” from Uncle Sam" My master Sgt. would sarcastically say… Often. Might have been from your stock. That was a well timed escape, Jim don’t look so good, I’d hate to be the first one he comes across.Looks like Wally has seen a few go round’ the bend in his travels. Deep psychological trauma like Jim’s are often irrevocable, the usual outcome is death. How easily we place a value on the life of another being. If we look at the past we can see prima facie examples of the lack of regard for the rights of others to exist. Little has changed in the last 5000 years if you look at the world at large. the only thing we have gotten better at is killing. Whatever excuse we make to assert our right to self preservation, may involve depriving someone else of theirs.Well it’s true that there’s no saving Jim, there is a jail, but asylums, limited medical facilities, and the odds of one of the lizard folk being a shrink are pretty slim. Out of compassion we lock up the most violent of our citizens in treatment facilities and prisons. To keep those of us who can behave ourselves safe, is the primary purpose, keeping them safe is the other.Treatment is attempted, with some results, or maybe no progress. To many, still lucid enough and smart it is a game to be played. There was a study recently comparing the traits of psychopaths to CEO’s, Politicians, Bankers and other driven types who are successful.Let us just say the similarities were frightening 8 out of 10 traits were exactly the same.It would explain a lot of things as to why our culture worships greed and celebrity. The truth is we vote, accept, worship, and adore, as well as loathe the high functioning successful psychopaths who are running everything. You know it must be bad when even the Pope is going, hold on, somethings not right, we need a rational discourse here on the division of wealth. We trust these psychos to keep us safe, to grow our investments, drop bombs on people who might be our enemies, further our political agendas, ad naseum…I don’t see it changing anytime soon, we still need people able to access their animal state easily.I would hope Jim would snap out of his, before it is too late.
The brightest things are at this point is that Jim has not started running. I had imagined that he would be running in Holly and Chic’s general direction. Maybe he will try to get into Wally’s cell. I think Wally would prefer to have Jim go after him than Holly. Besides, Wally is more of a fighter.
Gosh that last panel is still chilling. I’m with Olonga – toss Sarah to the raccoon. I think Cheapskate is right – there’s not going to be a happy ending here – not for Jim anyway. I’m not so sure anyone there has the facilities to talk him down – if he even can be calmed by this point. The one who has the biggest sway over him is the one who betrayed him and who, I’ll bet, would be the last to try and do anything for him. Poor guy.
Veteran,As an engineer who has worked in his field for 23 years I can’t help wondering what “superior engineer skills” you are talking about. The best thing that can be said about Wally’s people skills is that he comes off as more of a “normal” person who worked as an engineer than the autistic spectrum disordered person (like me) who was drawn to engineering. Thus he has somewhat more people skills than the stereotypical Dilbert style engineer.Harming people may not be Wally’s preferred method of doing things but he can be very effective when he has no choice. He was very effective at fighting the much larger Flask and in the end was willing to kill her to save others (even if we could argue that the people he was saving were not exactly deserving). Besides, who would you rather see facing off against an axe crazy anthro raccoon? Wally or Holly?
@Veteran First off, since the luck of timing missed the day by one I’ll say it now- thanks for your service ( I spent yesterday chasing down graves of various grandfathers and my father going back as far as the revolution- placing the final 2 flags at sunset in the same cemetery for my wifes uncle and one g.g.grandfather (CSA)), a long day.
What I’m finding interesting with Jim here is he’s not so much
in an state of mind I would expect from an animal, a feral animal is quiet for the most part- snarling only when directly confronted. Raccoon’s don’t howl, their larynx doesn’t support that ( while Jim has morphed and can speak, if he’s howling I figure thats a contribution of the human side). So I’m wondering if this is a bit more of the ultimate psych episode as instead of any for of completely turning raccoon?
I know what you mean about a small guy tossing people around, I’m an EMT and just people with blood sugar issues can be an hand full when they no longer notice something hurts ( the idiots on bath salts… well, a lot worse). So if Jim’s passed the point where he can handle what his reality has become, there may be no choice but stop him quickly as possible.
Chances are the self-respecting reptiles are going to close up every hole they come across. And it won’t matter that the King’s eldest son is still in there. After all, the King is willing to let Phil the Cook have another fight with The Cat in the hopes that they’ll both kill each other. …Of course, if that is indeed what happens, it means the King is going to have a rather difficult time trying to hide from the Queen for allowing that to happen.…The King wants to protect his subjects, but he doesn’t have the guts to protect his own son.
What the heck happened to Wednesday?Raccoons are pretty dangerous critters when they don’t have mental trauma. It helps that Jim is a petite raccoon. Anyways, Endtown and Doc Rat need your love and votes at TopWebComics.
Sarah has given Jim plenty of reason to be enraged out of his mind, so why does everyone jump to the conclusion that he’s suffering from “Schism Syndrome”? I don’t think that we ever heard of that in Endtown; probably the first we heard of it was in the Reptile Realm, where the lizard who “identified” it was looking for an excuse to attack Jim. Do we really have good independent reason to believe that this syndrome really exists?

Maybe Jim can squeeze through that hole. After all, to him, it’s just another missing brick in the wall.

Jim looks like he’s trying to tear his skin off.

Oh man. Jim is terrifying. D: Ain’t no one’s caught the mouse that she doesn’t want catching yet, but can a baby chick outrun a rabid raccoon?

The ultimate betrayal anger, the best thing the colony could do is throw Sarah to the raccoon.

“Jim’s ears are folded back….no longer erect. This is indeed serious. When any animal folds back its ears there is a attack fixing to begin.”
Likely a hardwired response, much like Wally’s tail. Good point.
