That’s what really motivated Michael, the idea that he’d have to ‘pick up every toy he ever owned’. Not so much that his parents would be disappointed that he never did much to help out…-Oh, well. At least it gets the carrots peeled…
With both parents working, my brother and I stayed in the house after school by ourselves. We had strict rules of conduct and some serious responsibilities! We took pride in our roles, which made us surprisingly compatible. We fought less when we were unsupervised. Who would have guessed!
Anyone remember the Blondie strip -Blondie calls Dagwood and asks him to put four potatoes on the stove. When she gets home, theres the 4 potatoes sitting on the stove! (unpeeled and unboiled)
Michael’s father might get P.O’d as well, but that would be over anything. If Michael is told to do any chores and John comes home to see undone work; John would usually get angry because he would surmise the chores did not get done due to Michael farting around.

You could have peeled them 10 times already.

Nice self-motivation, Mikey. Your parents’ll be so proud of you once they get home.

I would have just peel the carrots instead of trying to decide whether or not to peel the carrots

Well, if that’s your motivation… okay. Meanwhile, your parents work just because it’s the right thing to do. I guess in time you’ll learn.

He just needed a moment to see that there were far worse things in life than having to peel a few carrots.

Interesting — the kid has some idea of consequences and just the hint of a conscience…

The lesser of the two evils! Lol!

Well, we already know that Greg Evans sometimes forgets his backstories. So it should come as no surprise that other cartoonists do as well…
