I have found that people do not pay attention when they make a call….I worked at a major pharmacy some years back and would answer the phone.. “Thank you for calling (pharmacy name) this is Laynegg. How may I help you?” and invariably the caller would say " is this (pharmacy name)?Once I answered back “No, this is (pharmacy name).” and the person told me sorry and hung up. Whoops! I thought I had made a major mistake but the person called right back and I told her “Yes, yes this is (pharmacy name).” Never again. LOL!
when my daughter and son in law built their new house they got the old phone number of an out of business luggage store and for about 5 years they got calls daily asking abut luggage……never did figure out why they went out of business.
My solution to receiving calls from people i don’t know is to let my answering machine pick up first & if it’s somebody i don’t know they’ll only be talking to the machine until it cuts them off.
I had a caller one time that kept calling me back, even though I told them the person was not at my number. The last time they called, I told them she wasn’t home. They then asked when she’d be home. I told them, “never”. I have fun on the phone with telemarketers also. When they call, I tell them I’m SO glad they called, and give them my pizza order.
Remember getting a call on our business answering machine and some woman saying “Rebecca, I’m sorry I’’ll be late for our date.” Wondered how she ever explained why she was so late to Rebecca when she finally got there.
After trying unsuccessfully to convince people that “Ann” didn’t live here I struck upon the right answer. Said she was in the jail and asked me to have her friends go down there and help bail her out. Got no more calls.
I once got one of these calls… and when I explained that they had dialed the wrong number and that I had no idea who the person they wanted to talk to was, they accused me of being a liar.
My bookstore and the public library had only two numbers reversed. I would frequently supply the requested information, sometimes having to look it up in the inventory. One time, Sears called me at the library to tell me the order was in; my wife (holding down the store) explained how they “knew” I was at the library.

I’m sick to the back teeth of recorded messages.
I’ve blocked all “Unregistered” numbers on my mobile phone.

No Earl, you didn’t deserve that. She could have laughed, but you’re married to a cranky old battleaxe.
