Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for March 19, 2015
Transcript:
Mary Lou says, "You do know, taking care of the chickens will be work!" Meg says, "Work!" Meg says, "Like folding napkins every day? Or sweeping pop's office? And the store room?" Meg says, "Like scraping and loading plates when the dishwasher didn't show for his stuff?" Mary Lou says, "Well, not that much work!"

I try not to complain, but she did look considerably better before.

Work……If you play your cards right, over a lifetime, you can get to the point where you don’t have to do it, except when you want to….

Retirement: The hours are great! The pay could be better…..Well, OK, it sucks….But the hours really are great!

Does anyone have a link to the last appearance of Meg before this ugh version?

It is good to see a young girl with chores. Kids have waaaay too much time on their hands with no personal responsibilities or contributions to their families. I am glad that Meg is asked to contribute to the daily chores. I ran restaurants, & family-run restaurants are the best! All family members play a part in one way or another.

http://www.gocomics.com/arloandjanis/2014/12/15 Little Meg in the kitchen with her Mom and Gene. Guessing JJ is portraying her entering that “awkward age” being 11 or so. Going through it was awful. Doesn’t seem to happen anymore with makeup, hairstyles and all preteens look 20 overnight.

Meg, you are going to need to get a bigger brood box. I have 16 chicks in a 2’X6’ brooder and they are quickly out growing it at 3 weeks of age.<><me

She knows work……

She doesn’t know dealing with chickens, especially cleaning a chicken house.

I don’t like it when an adult or instructer will tell you something is a ‘lot of work’. It sounds like they feel you can’t handle it. Or as in Meg’s case, all the work she did at the resturant didn’t count.

I helped clean chicken coops for relatives as a child. Every three to four weeks straw had to be changed and rails scraped. It was particularly bad in summer.

I don’t know what happened to Meg. Now she looks like Elmer Fudd wearing a bad wig.

@SuzanneBarnhillThat’s typical of Jimmy Johnson’s shading work, like what I think of as the big hand print on Janis’s hair. If you look at the link in the comments to the December strip, you’ll see it doesn’t look so beany-ish on Meg’s old hairstyle.

I kind of like that he’s making them appear a little more human…without the long face that looked like a dog. Might need some tweeking though

She actually doesn’t look much different except for the haircut and the beanie. I usually read this comic in the newspaper where the beanie looks like a bald spot. It is just a white spot. Very confusing.

She was featured in Oct 13-18, 2014 strips. By the 18th, she was looking weird.

Raising chickens is work, but it’s a lot of fun. Ours follow us all around the yard. Today I had to haul 200 pounds of feed to the barn. Tomorrow I’m supposed to clean the chicken coop. Fertilizer.
