Because someone can’t tell Chinese from Japanese?

There were originally several languages in Korea; eventually one tribe conquered the others, and imposed their language. If the Japanese originated in Korea, as seems likely given the geography, they must have spoken one of the other languages. Modern Korean and Japanese have borrowed considerably from each other, but they were quite distinct languages, especially in the oldest surviving written samples.

There is a proposed Altaic language group, which includes Turkish, Mongolian, and many of the Siberian tribal languages, but it’s not accepted by most experts. It takes a language family that broad to include both Japanese and Korean, and even that is questionable.

It sounds to me as though speakers of Chinese and Japanese are used to a consonant that’s about halfway between L and R, and they use it for both. In our uncritical ears, we assume they’ve flipped the two around.

As they say, a person with a foreign accent speaks one more language than you do.

“Japanese is derived from Chinese”? Since when? Are you confusing the borrowing of Kanji from Chinese? Because that would be like saying English is a Romance Language because we use the Latin alphabet.
