When I was younger, LOL did mean “lots of love”… teenagers used it to sign off on birthday cards and letters (remember those? )along with things like SWAK for “sealed with a kiss”.

And on the envelope, the oh so clever “D-liver D-letter D-sooner D-better.”

(Yes, I’m that old.)

Later it meant “little old lady” (or ladies)… as in “looked like all the LOLs in town were eating lunch at Woolworths today.”When I first saw it used for “laughing out loud” , before I figured it out, I wondered what old ladies had to do with the joke.

Meanwhile, I suppose running outside to flee is better than always RITP.

I’ve seen people translate LOL as lots of laughs. It’s only recent that I’ve seen this, so I guess it’s just people trying to be different.
