It’s a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world.

At least Charlie Brown understands that sometimes it’s important to just be understanding… even when you don’t understand.

That was a higher degree of interpersonal savvy than we’re used to seeing from Charlie Brown

This must have been written before Schulz established Lila as Snoopy’s previous owner.

From a comment a few days ago:

Lila was a little blonde girl. From the Peanuts Wiki: Lila was Snoopy’s original owner, having bought the young beagle at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Lila loved Snoopy very much but her family, who lived in an apartment building, decided that they couldn’t keep him. Snoopy was returned to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm and was subsequently bought by Charlie Brown.

The book / movie “Snoopy Come Home” addresses who Lila is. The book was originally published in 1972 and I believe the movie came out at the same time. It was my favorite book when I was little kid. I can still remember begging my Mom to read it to me.

These original strips were from 1968, about four years before the movie “Snoopy Come Home” was released.

Schulz was only exploring the possibility of adding a character, not “fleshing her out” as they say.

I remember seeing “Snoopy Come Home.” The hauntingly beautiful “Lila’s Theme (Do You Remember Me?)” written by the Sherman Brothers and sung by Shelby Flint was quite moving, seeing the usually unflappable Snoopy’s anguish as he read Lila’s letter and the memories flooding back.

I just assumed Lila was the name of some old flame of the philandering Schulz. Could be, too.
