Caulfield: Why am I beginning to think this whole "A for effort" thing is a myth? Mrs. Olsen: Why am I beginning to think this whole "effort" thing is a myth?
Don’t know about anywhere else, but in New York City the grade-school year runs from a couple of days after Labor Day to the last week of June. It’s been that way at least since my childhood more than half a century ago.
2 weeks to go here, in one of the northern states. But private schools are either already out, or this is the last week. Personally? I keep having to remind myself that I would be a BAD mommy if I kept my kids home now. Oh, and I need this time to GET READY for the little rascals!(Suppose I should get off of gocomics, huh?);-)
In Tucson, school started on August 1 last “fall”, and ended on May 21. So our kids get 4 weeks before Labor Day, and a week off before Memorial Day. They have lots of lame excuses, but I think these schedules are set up based on the School Board’s vacation plans.
It’s best if students and teachers are separated for 3 months. Even in the best situations, they get on each others nerves….In Michigan, the tourist industry, which is big here, had a law passed that banned school before Labor Day. The start date for many school districts was creeping up to Aug 20, which seriously slashed tourism money….And you need money coming in to run schools….
We started the day after labor day and went 3 days into June. And the semester ended in the middle of January. Makes sense to shift the end of semester to Just before Christmas.

Caulfield, like many kids, has yet to learn that he’s not being graded on Creative Excuses.

My kids get out in three days, which is very early compared to the rest of Michigan.

Many schools here in California go back in mid August! Way too early, it was never until after Labor Day when I grew up.

Snow days? What are these Snow days of which you speak. Never had a single one as a kid growing up in the “Great White North”.

Oh, and school ran from the day after Labour day, until the end of the fourth week in June.
