I can’t honestly remember school starting in September when I was a kid. But to be honest it’s been over thirty years since I was either of their ages so it could have been September and I don’t remember. But I remember junior high and senior high it being the end of August when school started, believe I remember the same in 6th grade (my last elementary was K-6 and junior high was 7-8; second to last was K-5 then 6th grade was the start of middle school).
I do remember starting in September but I was really young. Around the time I was in 3rd or 4th Grade, school started the last week in August. Now, teachers start the first week of August and the kids start the second week. We don’t even get ten weeks for the entire summer break, much less eleven! (We typically get out earlier than we used to though. I remember going to school until the second week of June when I was younger, too!)
When & where I was growing up (in NH), school ALWAYS started the Wednesday after Labor Day, except for my 1st day of 1st grade, which was September 1, 1970. Kindergarten was pay and more akin to modern daycare, so I never went. Our elementary school was 1-6, Junior High 7-9, and High School 10-12. However, my daughters schools are K-5, “Middle School” 6-8, HS 9-12, and the starting date has run the gamut from the traditional Wed. after Labor Day to the Friday before, to the last week of August.
In the South, many schools will start by the end of the first week of August. Like in 4 weeks. Another reason when I read Peanuts growing up I knew it wasn’t set anywhere near me.
Back in those days, a lot of schools in California started on September 10, since 9/9 is a state holiday (it’s the day California became a state) and ran until mid-June.(“They never say Peanuts is in California” – no, but that’s where Schulz lived)
For me it was almost always the day after Labour Day, although that appears to have changed since I was in school. In my part of Canada we didn’t and don’t have Middle School of Junior High. Elementary was 1-8 (when I was going; it is now K-8) and High School is 9-12, although for many years in Ontario there was Grade 13 (unlucky them).
For those mentioning starting after Labor Day, by the time I actually remember school starting Labor Day became the first holiday of the school year. Would have about a week, week and a half before Labor Day then have a three day weekend with the teachers seeming like they wanted to give us a weeks worth of homework over the weekend.

Schulz really knew kids. Little ones obsess about being prepared for the first day. Slightly older kids are ambivalent.

Two more months until you put away your Summer clothes for the year and get the Autumn/Winter coats again.

Most kids I knew not only wanted to be late the first day of school, but to miss it completely! (The first week, for that matter!)
