Dave represented those of us who never joined up, those of us who could never feel comfortable with the status quo, and those of us who could not embrace the conformity that so many others cherish. His irreverence and snarky subversiveness helped calm our otherwise frayed nerves and validated our own weird uniqueness, self-consciousness, and humanity. He gave us a language, a series of code words and expressions, that enabled us to mix among the normals. Yep, he will be missed.
Looking forward to Colbert. I could take only so much of his Comedy Central show, a little too bombastic. He was portraying a character, I would like to see him just be himself. Looking forward to Trevor Noah as well. Will see what happens.
Yeah we all have our likes and dislikes. Carson and Leno were good and kind. Letterman was often mean spirited and unpleasant. He was particularly mean to Lindsay Lohan Stewart is a jerk. Another ugly mean person. So, a suitable replacement for a rotten bum. Fallon is extremely talented and funny. And nice, too.
I don’t miss Dave, really. I have to admit, once he announced his retirement he hit a pretty good stretch run. But many, many years before that he was just phoning it in; and it was obvious every night (unless it was a rerun; then it was obvious again if you sat through it). I do miss Jay; and I do miss Craig (Ferguson, that is; Kilborn I don’t miss all that much). And I do miss Johnny; but he’s been gone for so long that I’m over it. I really don’t find Fallon, Meyers, or Kimmel that entertaining; and I was never a fan of O’Brien (still not, either). Arsenio was funny the first time around, not so much the second time. If I’m up late enough, I’ll watch a little Corden. But I’m trying to get to sleep earlier nowadays. And I probably will watch Colbert’s premiere just to see how he handles the slot; then I’ll start going back to sleep earlier.
Although I gravitated toward Jay Leno, it’s hard not to appreciate Dave’s uniqueness. On the night of the final show, Conan gave a great tribute to how well Dave “infiltrated” the genre as an oddball in disguise, laying the groundwork for others like him. And there’s no better successor than Colbert. If he takes full advantage of his geek cred, Steven could easily take the show to new levels.

I miss Johnny and Leno. Dave was funny when he 1st started, but the last 10 years or so h’s been nothing more then a mouthpiece for the left.

I’m so old that I miss Steve Allen. He actually started the whole late night thing and he was brilliant!
