Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for June 24, 2015
Transcript:
Rat: Do you think it's odd for a 47-year-old adult to religiously watch MTV's 'The Challenge', a show about 20-somethings playing games and having romances with other 20-somethings? Goat: Maybe a little. Why? Pastis: I have ears, you know. Rat: No reason. Goat: You don't really- Pastis: I enjoy the drama!

Iām in my 40s now and I still enjoy watching cartoons. Their generally viewed as being for kids, but I enjoy the diversion they offer. Mind you, not all cartoons are to my taste, some I find too sophomoric even for the age group their supposed to be aimed at. Nor do I only watch cartoons. Of late Iāve been watching some old shows that either ran before I was born (Burns and Allen, McHaleās Navy, Hazel, Bewitched, Denise the Menace, The Addams Family, I Dream of Jeannie, Hoganās Heroes, F Troop, Abbot and Costello) or shows which may have began before I was born but ended after (Emergency, M*A*S*H, Match Game) Iāll watch dramas, action/adventure, educational, cooking, game shows, whatever holds my interest. What one likes watching is up to them.

The last time I watched MTV, Daria was still first-run. To this day, it is still the only thing worth watching that was on MTV.

I love Shaun the Sheep! And there were some Wallace and Gromit computer games, too, that came out after the cartoon, that were quite enjoyable. Oh, Iām middle aged, too. ug.

Yeah, sure. Some alibi, Cartoon-Boy. Just admit it: as your puns also prove, and as Staci knows, you have no taste!
By choice, I have no cable or satellite and so have āmissedā a good many popular and not-so-popular shows that donāt appear on broadcast TV. What a pity! (sarcasm font)

I saw almost all the 80s music videos (which were entertaining)- once they started that other stuff ā I quit watching MTV. The āMā now stands for moron, thank you Sherlock Watson.

I quit TV years ago and find myself annoyed when I visit friends and relatives and it is constantly ON, with endless commercials occasionally interrupted by some mindless program.

mtv and vh1 used to show music videos and concerts and music. not anymore. just like tlc used to show docs about how stuff works and history channel actually showed history. and, discovery showed docs. animal planet showed nature docs. natl geo, show anthropology. but, now, it is all reality crap. so much, crap. i know that i donāt want to go to orange county, or jersey. or, be a crab fisherman. or, live in alaska. and, survive naked in the wilderness. or, date naked. or, that rich 16 year old girls are spoiled brats. or, teenage mothers are doing porn. or, the kardashians talk like the californians. and, a bunch of men are looking for a mythical creature or ghosts. or, that it is ok to have 19+ kids and even more ok, if one of those kids molest his sisters. or, it is ok to stage beauty pageants for 4 year old girls.

Has anyone noticed that Stephan Pastisā speech bubbles always make his characters shout their words?

Wow, Patsis is as old as I am. And I enjoy reading newspaper/web comics about talking animals.

I enjoy the travel shows on Monday-night PBS. Mainly if I watch any TV at all, at my daughterās itās miles of Star Trek reruns, 30ās and 40ās movies and āThe Match Gameā reruns from some golden-oldies channel; here at home itās usually sports in season or anything having to do with cars or motorcycles. Wayne Carini has the bluest eyes!

The only reason MTV and VH1 are still available is that everyone who has satellite is forced to pay for them. For some reason, they are always in ātier 1.ā If satellite and cable were ācafeteriaā plan, there would be a lot less channels to choose from, but the channels left would be a lot better. The main reason I do not have cable or satellite is that I donāt want to pay for junk channels.

Some of the early Disney cartoons and the Merrie Melodies series are quite sophisticated. I was amazed at how funny they were. They went right over my head when I was a child.

For those of us who grew up before internet porm, a parallel remark would have been āI donāt buy it for the pictures, itās the articles and cartoons.ā

Not so! The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time with Finn and Jake, Teen Titans, GO! and several others on Cartoon Network are really quite good. And then there is the Adult Swim segment, Toonami, on Saturday nights with some very nice work, though not appropriate for children.

If he spent any time as a draftsman, it would be understandable. I have to stop to remember how some of the lowercase letters are made, and I canāt remember how most cursive letters, capitol or lowercase are made. Iām about 35 years out of practice.
