Yes, I live in a small town in SW OKLA without a real library. My son lives in OKC which has a large library with a huge online selection. I use his account and download books directly to my KindleFire and have two weeks to read them. They have a lot of new releases and you can put yourself on a hold list for them and they will automatically check it out when your turn comes up. I’ve read hundreds of books from them in the last year and a half.
I’m glad summer reading lists didn’t exist when I was in school. I don’t understand the purpose of them. Unless it’s to make kids hate reading and books.
ebsan, you must be ancient! We had them when I was a kid. Read The Hobbit in ‘67. Don’t remember what else. Had a list of about 30 and had to read, maybe 8 of them?
But I do have one word for Zack and his mom….LIBRARY!
There are also second hand bookstores and if necessary eBay may have what you need cheap. Oh, and back in the 60s where I went to school, we didn’t have summer reading lists, just library contests, with free movie tickets for prizes.
When I went to school we were never handed reading lists. I went to the library anyway. Also, in real life, is the teacher the next grade up going to ask about the reading lists? Nope. But in comic strip land, I don’t remember any of the teachers asking if the kids read any of the books on the list they handed out.
Graduated High School in 1976 and never had a summer reading list. However, I was a bookworm and read all summer any way. At some point I read all the Perry Mason mysteries, everything by Ellery Queen, biographies of many famous folks and any science fiction book I could get my hands on.
The Library system where I used to live had a Great deal. You could check out books via Snail Mail. You went online, checked the titles you Wanted to read and they Mailed them to your house.A friend of mine used the system for ALL her reading. When she finished a book, they also had a Drive Through so she could return the books on the way to work without getting out of the car..She also browsed the Publishers’ “Coming Soon” lists for her favorite authors and was usually the First Person to receive New books due to having put them on her “Wish List” as soon as the new titles were announced..
