BP’s adventures in the Gulf of Mexico are reminiscent of the plumbing episode.

BP is now being sued by the estate of Rube Goldberg for copyright and patent infringement.

Just when you think you couldn’t hate an oil company more, BP steps up to show just how wrong you were. The problem remaining is that they’re giving money-hungry corporate scum a bad name.

@poppa, while you can be mad at BP for overconfidence, the mile deep well is a technical first. It is much easier to deal with problems in shallow water, or easiest of all on land (Alaska would be the best place to drill.) Under a mile of water, the pressure is too great for manned equipment, and the oil itself is under tremendous pressure.

So why did they try (and fail horribly) to drill a well under a mile of water? Because they can’t get a permit anywhere else for fear of spills. Very ironic. The Chinese are drilling our shallow water oil (with the clever technique of drilling down just outside the international perimeter, then drilling horizontally under the floor to tap our oil).

This is shaping up to be a really horrible catastrophe that may change large stretches of shoreline forever. We don’t know yet whether it’s BP’s fault, but I hope it will make it easier to get permits in safer parts of the world. But knowing Washington, they can’t do this. They will have to tighten up everywhere. They are driven by politics, not logic. In the meantime, maybe it’s good that Tim can “mine” a little humor out of this. That’s all the good that will ever come of it, I’m afraid.

In an early “Bloom County” strip, Laurel and Hardy were working for the EPA and cleaning up toxic waste; maybe they can clean up this mess too.

The planet has always had holes in it bleeding out the contents. We have animals in the Gulf of Mexico which can only survive on the oil from oil seeps. Most early oil exploration was based on oil seeps and the fact that there was natural gas in the water or places where a fire kept burning from rocks.
