Alice: As parks go, Ron, Lafayette is probably still the best for street people. It's safe, it's got a public washroom, and the area's good for panhandling. Rick: Who's that old guy over there? Alice: That's crazy Elmont. He's pretty hard core. Elmont; Hey! Our $200 billion deficit can be wiped out without raising taxes or cutting defense! Hey, listen to me! Rick: How sad. Alice: The tragic price of deinstitutionalization, Rob.

I see these people all the time… only now they are speaking on a cellphone. Bluetooth headsets are the worst, when you can’t even tell they are on the phone.

In the 80’s I worked a a mall overlooking an interstate. A guy was sitting on the guardrail at the edge of the parking lot. He sounded for all the world like he was talking on a CB radio, squawky static and all. A National Guard convoy was going by on the interstate below. He turned to me and said, “Those can’t be our boys, they aren’t answering me.”

Dear gentle reader, I would like to inform you that the sum of $57,057 is your share of the national debt of the United States, the sum owed by each citizen. Have a nice day.http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Yesterday I was approached by women in two different parking lots (restaurant, grocery store) yesterday, asking for help to get a meal or to make a phone call. Our city has outlawed panhandling on Interstate exits and such, so the “street people” do this. There’s no easy answer – I do spend time food-shopping on Thursdays and cooking three courses on Fridays to take to people who line up in the alley of our small alternative church.Want to help give them something to look forward to, if nothing else.I worked for sixteen years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and do have a grasp of the situation. And things weren’t as bad then as they are now.

I refer to reputable sources for budget information that are not slanted to what one or the other political party wants. I would highly recommend the Congressional Budget Office for factual information rather than the “debt clock” and other partisan statements that do not provide any supporting data. Unless, of course, you want to be lazy or partisan and just state a bottom-line conclusion you read on your favorite rant.
