My husband is allergic to turkey so we’ve never had it for Thanksgiving. We have whatever we feel like. My husband actually set up a Google doc so we could vote for what we want every year. Some of our favorites are bacon cheeseburger meatloaf, pork loin, steak, roast beef, fried fish, or marinated chicken breasts…to name a few.
A few years before my mother passed away, she said she was tired of having turkey every Thanksgiving and Christmas. So my sister began serving lasagna or roast for those holidays and continues to do so.
Here in Texas, regional grocery store chain H-E-B was trying to position beef brisket as an alternative for the holidays. Unfortunately, Covid, the lockdowns, and the resulting supply chain disruptions all put an end to this and other efforts they were doing, including some charitable efforts.

It’s interesting that Easter also fell on March 31 of 2002, the year these reprints are from.

What? Why no Spam, the All-American dish? Maybe Cajun Spam?

OK, kid, there’s a likelihood that the Pilgrims ate venison and seafood for Thanksgiving. If you can kill a deer and field dress it, we’ll eat it.

I call it Anglo soul food – going through extra effort to honor ancestors (cf lutefisk for Scandinavians).
