Lacey: Where's your young man, Joanie? I thought he was joining us? Joanie: I'm afraid he's on deadline again, Lacey. The paper has asked him to write a daily diary about his relationship with Jeffrey. Apparently there's a lot of interest in the new breed of involved, hands-on fathers. Jeff: Daddy? Rick: Not now, son. Daddy's busy.

I’m glad my folks believed hands on meant being there and even busy with another task would stop and answer any question.

My grandkids are the recipients of this type of parenting, although it’s mostly social media occupying the parents. Papa always has time for them and the parents wonder why they kids like to spend time with me.

One of the best moments of my life; left work early and got to my son’s little league game just in time to see him hit his first home run. Wouldn’t trade that moment for any money it may have cost me to be there.

My nephew’s toddler daughter developed a solution for inattention, she grabbed her mother’s iPhone 6 and, with every ounce of energy in her, she threw it to the floor. Point taken.

First it became necessary for a family to have two incomes to reach the middle class; then it became critical due to layoffs – a nice word for being fired for costing the enterprise money – and now parents who aren’t willing to sacrifice their health and their children’s lives to corporate demands are shortly made expendable (and expended). Remember when one political party announced itself “family friendly”?

Twice lately my husband and I have been out at family restaurants, near tables with Mom, Dad and two or three kids, and every last one of ’em was on a device. If one of them had poofed! out of sight, no one at those tables would have noticed. VERY sad to watch.

So does Jeff now dye his hair? He’s a blond in modern time.
