My wife had that happen, except her jaw was stuck open for several days. Required surgery on one side of her jaw, and had an implant cushion placed. Then the implant got recalled and she needed a second surgery to remove it. Couldn’t sue the implant maker cause they took bankruptcy. Good part is that we’re 30 years in after the 2nd surgery, and everything is working fine. (Knock on wood).
I have TMJ and it was made worse by my braces before jaw surgery. I was at a Burger King with my husband, bit into a whopper, and my jaw locked. I couldn’t finish biting or pull the sandwich out. I had to twist it apart and pull the pieces from my mouth. VERY embarrassing! I didn’t eat in public again until AFTER the surgery!
Wow, that must be terrible for all of you.But I must say….for Opal she still has her hands free to give him a slap or a punch or maybe just the evil eye.
Back in the late 70s, I worked for an insurance company, and TMJ was not commonly covered by anybody. The Insurance Commissioner insisted it be covered, so our company complied. But – they would only cover the service if it was performed by a podiatrist. Try explain that to a subscriber! It only took two lawsuits to get them to straighten up.
I’m a chiropractor. I had a patient come in with low back pain. He was also scheduled for jaw surgery. He couldn’t open his mouth but a few millimeters. After the first adjustment to his low back I noticed his voice sounded normal; before his voice was very garbled due to lack of jaw function. I wasn’t going to say anything because I thought maybe it was my imagination. I also didn’t want the guy to think I was crazy. The next thing the guy says, “Hey I can move my jaw.” I said, “I thought you sounded different.” He cancelled the surgery. That was the weirdest thing I’ve had happen in my 33 years of practice. My colleagues and I figured the musculature running from sacrum to skull must have been compensating for his low back or pelvis and the adjustment produced slack or reduced the compensation allowing his jaw to free up.
Opal is, usually, never at a loss for words. I’m sure while Earl feels her pain ( and is likely to feel more if he doesn’t shut up ) , he’s grateful for the respite.
that’s good. i’ve got a friend who’s radiation treatment caused all his teeth to crumble and what was left had to be removed. the company said this was covered beforehand, refused to pay afterwards. apparently, he was supposed to let cancer kill him would be better than them paying for all the teeth being extracted. my insurance teacher said his main recourse might be to go public and shame them into paying. crazy world we live in

Poor Opal! Earl may be secretly happy about this. By the way. Did no one pick up Opal’s sister at the airport?
