Mary Lou: Pop thinks maybe we should open some kind of roadside stand! Gene: It's not like we haven't thought of that! Gene: We decided sitting in lawn chairs watching cars go by wouldn't be very productive! Mary Lou: Maybe we were wrong! Maybe something in between a full-service restaurant and a tent! Gene: With t-shirts? Mary Lou: You are SO easy!

Sounds like a plan….Doing something a little differently sometimes works out big time…Niche marketing…Might want to start making some wine, too….Build that up as a side line…..Anyway, rethinking is always a good idea….How hard is it to make home made corn dogs?…people love corn dogs….And pies….People love unique home made pies…Most people don’t know where Good Heart, Michigan is..(South of Legs Inn in Cross Village, another example of niche marketing)….Besides the bakery, there isn’t much there….But that’s where you have to go for the best raspberry pie in the universe…The even have a little red heart carved in the middle of the crust….The other pies are only the best on the planet…

The owner of Portillo’s restaurants in Chicago started with a hot dog trailer in Villa Park IL, and turned it into a multi million $ restaurant chain that he just sold and now he is very wealthy.

Perfect example of how expectations can screw up your life. Look at what you want, then look at what IS, then figure out how to get from A to B. Like Dick Portillo, you create your market first (hot dog stand, farm stand, whatever). THEN you build to meet your market.

Here’s a local phenomenon that grew into a niche market…Coombs Market

Coombs Market reminds me a lot of a place near Eldest Daughter’s home. On one side is an Amish market – fresh produce (with a website to tell you what’s coming in now), fresh baked goods, free apples for the kids, etc. On the other side they have a nice little restaurant with fabulous soup and sandwich combos. There is also a craft shop on the property, but the big draw is the market.

It looks as if they lost a bunch of money trying to sell wholesale to restaurants and trying to do retail at farmer’s markets. The only money they made was retail right on the farm. A roadside stand looks like a good way to expand their retail channel.
