Willy: Pass card? Officer, this isn't Pretoria. Cop: No, sir, it's Palm Beach. All hotel and domestic employees must carry I.D.s/ Willy: So? That's their problem. Cop: No, sir, it's yours. If you don't have an I.D., then I'll have to arrest you for loitering. Willy: Loitering? How could I be loitering at 35 mph? Cop: I meant speeding. If you'll get out of the vehicle, please, sir. Willy: This is definitely because I'm black, isn't it? Cop: No, sir, Hispanics are entitled to the same treatment.

Some things never change. Or they just might drag him outta there and shoot him as he reaches for his wallet.

The policemanâs either carrying a huge hog-leg pistol or an over-under shotgun. Heâs ready for a little resistance.

This strip was published 30 years ago and, sadly, is all too relevant today.

Uh-oh, heâs resisting arrest. I guess theyâll just have to use deadly force.

In many of the larger cities in the South, journeyman slaves(who sometimes worked without oversight), carried âchitsâ, or stamped badges with a number on it. This was their pass in town.

Well, they do seem to want ID from out-of-state people too.

This situation is terrible, and if itâs still going on in this day and age, itâs even worse. But I couldnât resist a chuckle at the statement, âLoitering? How could I be loitering at 35 mph?â

Neither of those âcardsâ are what GTâs describing. This old program ended not long after it was exposed in Doonesbury due to FL law basically outlawing it.
The Voluntary ID is a check of identification through state/federal databases: basically a background check that your business does to you but they give a card to prove itâs been done. The Out-of-State is for owners of property who donât reside in FL but need to get back into the town after a natural disaster (Hurricane) when access is highly restricted â your normal drivers licenses wonât work since it wouldnât show a Palm Beach address.

Actually, I did read that first, it was just too close to pass up. About 10 years ago, my spouse and I were staying at the Breakers, a very posh Palm Beach hotel. We took a cab to a local sushi joint, then decided to walk back to the hotel. Rather than walk down the main street, we decided to walk down a residential street to the beach. About half way down the street, a cop pulled alongside and nicely asked if we needed directions. He suggested that we take the most direct route back. Again, he could not have been more polite, but the message was clear that we shouldnât be walking down a residential street at night. We were white 40-somethings, I suspect a minority would have gotten a more pointed reception.

The powers that be even hired black police to do their dirty work for them. Like the Buffalo soldiers whose job it was to kill Indians.
