Rat: Do you think people should have to know basic information about our government before being able to vote? Goat: Of course not. That's very elitist. Rat: Thirty-five percent of americans cannot name a single branch of the United States government. Goat: Okay, maybe a small test. Rat: Oh, and eight percent believe Elvis is alive.

Is there a correlation between the two?
Bilan about 9 years ago
About half the people don’t know approximately how long it takes for the Earth to go around the sun.
rbmumsie about 9 years ago
I thought the percentage of people who think Elvis is alive was higher than that.

A willfully ignorant electorate gets what it deserves. All a lot of people seem to want these days is to find ways to hate each other, not learn the facts. We will pay big time for that.

Nope.

Both China and Japan will experience financial crisis because California and most of the West coast dried up, burnt down and sank into the sea. The Rockie Mountain Confederacy, with west coast ports at New Portland and Las Vegas, will continue their territorial expansion in the mid-west. Meanwhile the so called US Congress remains gridlocked over budget issues.

And 93% believe anything they hear if it’s expressed as a statistic.

I am a bit surprised that Goat is such an unthinking Populist. But, then, allowing the demos to wield the kratos has been having shaky results since ancient Athens….

Steph thanks for reminding everyone to vote tomorrow :-)

Naw, Elvis died at the end of “Bubba-Hotep”.
derdave969 about 9 years ago
A sterling example of correlation is not causation.
Holden Awn about 9 years ago
Very un-P.C. to say, but IMHO everybody should have to pass a basic civics test to be allowed to vote.

1 in 4 Americans still believe the sun revolves around the Earth.

Elvis is running a deli in Newark now, I understand. Jointly owned with Judge Crater and Jimmy Hoffa.

Only 32% don’t know, I thought it would be more like 32% DO KNOW!

And let us not forget (from HuffPo et al.): “…29 percent of Louisiana Republicans said Obama was responsible for the Katrina response.” Sadly, disastrously (even without Katrina or Obama…), these days the Republican Party is indeed The Party of Stupid.
Fido (aka Felix Rex) about 9 years ago
I had an “interesting” conversation with an otherwise rational adult about why the government changed the sun to go back to standard time this weekend.
kaffekup about 9 years ago
35%, huh? Probably the ones who vote republican..msdg6, I hope you’re being sarcastic. Or else you don’t remember the Recession of ‘08. Must have been O’s fault, right?

I’m with Rat on this one. Better yet, Politicians should have to pass some social science exams and have at least some college.

All the branches seem to have plenty of nuts growing on them.:BTW, don’t respond to the trolls; just flag them and move on.
whiteaj about 9 years ago
You should have to pay taxes in order to vote.
russellc64 about 9 years ago
Don’t be stupid. You can’t make a mark in outer space. Someone needs to wait here until we come back around.
Stream of conscience about 9 years ago
It depends how you phrase the question. Most of them know the President, the Supreme Court and Congress; they just don’t know they are branches of guvmint.

Lessee: Three branches of government, in (as far as I know) all fifty states plus the federal government: Executive (in theory, to administer the laws, but these days turning out lots of regulations too), Legislative (Two houses, of Senate and Representatives, in all but Nebraska, which are responsible for making the laws), and Judicial (Courts, responsible for interpreting the laws and deciding between opposing claims of persons or governments). They are supposedly made equal by the “checks and balances”—but usually one or the other is most powerful.

My Mum would love it if Elvis was still alive.
She’s a big fan.
Whereas my Dad is not.

Well, we just went through our semi-annual “Waah, it’s too hard to reset the clocks” ritual, as well as people complaining that figuring out how to insert at USB cord is too tricky. So I’m surprised it’s only 35%.

Incredibly, people still actually vote for republicans and democrats: proof, if ever any were needed, that the system doesn’t work.
Nick Danger about 9 years ago
The populace did not want Obamacare to pass – not one poll taken after the bill was actually introduced showed a majority approval, so in this case, it was not the ignorance of the people, but the willful ignorance and ‘We know what is best for everybody" attitude of the Democratic leadership ("We have to pass it so we’ll know what’s in it" – Nancy Pelosi) that gave us that one. A Congress that passes few laws is always better than one that passes many laws, as many laws result in more of the people being in violation of some law or regulation with the force of law, even when they try to be law-abiding. “We have to do something” is not, in fact, always true, but even when it is, the local governments are usually the best ones to do it.

Surprisingly, when asked about the components of the Affordable Care Act, like ending “pre-existing condition” exclusions and allowing young adults to remain on their parents’ insurance, most say they think it’s nifty.
Snoots about 9 years ago
So Americans, when election day comes if you don’t know what’s going on (which applies to 99% of us)… please support your government and stay home. This has been a public service announcement. Thank you.
ADDENDUM: For those of you who do know what’s going on… when was the last time voting put an effective person in office anyway? Does anyone really think anyone is going to solve our problems at this point? So go out, have a nice pint, and enjoy your day while you still can. 8D

Don’t have to read about her. I heard her.

If Elvis is still alive, he would now be 80 years old. With the drinking and drug habits he had, one could only wonder what condition he would be in. I still remember rumors of Hitler being alive until someone pointed out that, if he was, he would be way past the century mark. Will the Elvis believers try to set a record for him?

Hey Mr. Goph Man—didn’t you hear? Exoticdoc2 is the souce of all knowledge and the fount of all wisdom. I mean, who else here can explain so eloquently how bats are birds? How objects millions or even billions of light-years away were created less than 6,000 years ago? Why a few half-literate (at best) shepherds and fishermen know more about the universe than all modern scientists put together—without even needing telescopes or microscopes! If you need to know why putting blood on your house cures the house’s leprosy, or why animals who mate while looking at spotted objects produce spotted offspring, the doc is your guy!
