Danae: Wait...so you're saying this isn't the early version of Twitter and Facebook? Ned: Right. Danae: Oh...so what did you have instead of social media? Ned: We actually socialized in person. Danae: Oh...That's the saddest thing I ever heard. Ned: Trust me, you're about to be a lot sadder.

And why is that, Dad?
Varnes about 9 years ago
You’ll be a lot sadder when you realize that in American society we will never really socialize with each other, ever, again, because half of us hate the other half…And besides, socializing, is the same as socialism, right? See? We can’t agree on anything…

@VarnesYou hit it spot on !
I would only add that not only is the U.S. irrevocably, ideologically divided, but even within those divisions, there is absolutely no agreement !
Everyone is against something or someone. There is nothing positive, nothing optimistic, no love for their fellow man , in the modern American polemic.

Wonder what her dad is revealing? Not all was one on one to whoever on line; but no ‘smart phone’ etc. And some did not communicate, but others would not stop.

I grew up in a tenement in Brooklyn in the 1950s. I did the math. At two children per apartment (a very conservative figure for the baby boom), there were 600 kids on the street at any given hour of the day. That’s an area smaller than the size of a WW II aircraft carrier flight deck.
You learned to get along with others. You had no choice.

The saddest thing is seeing a group of kids hanging out together, all with their noses in their smartphone. On the other hand, it might be sadder if they were all standing around with megaphones/bullhorns.
