Dizzy Dean was one of the first professional athletes to take to broadcasting after his retirement from the game. Notorious for very strange expressions (like, “the runner slud [sic] into third base”), he once got a letter from a teacher who berated him for his style of speaking, especially for his very frequent use of “ain’t.” Keep in mind that this was during the Great Depression. Dean’s reaction? “Let the teachers teach English and I will teach baseball. There is a lot of people in the United States who say isn’t, and they ain’t eating.”
