Wonder Bread gets a lot of the stink that’s on pallid white bread of all sorts intended to satisfy the palates of four-year-olds, the ones that will happily eat school paste. Like the other packaged shelf bread, it’s carefully compounded to be fluffy when less than thoroughly baked, so it will stay soft longer. It has neither more nor less chemical content than other standard shelf bread. But, like others, some of its longevity is due to eliminating wheat flour fractions that contain valuable nutrition but spoil more quickly. Even your “whole wheat” bread and flour is most often bogus. Regulations allow labeling as whole wheat flour that’s been made up by remixing components. So whole wheat bread it often more a matter of color than nutrition. And Wheat germ is most often absent because its oils can go rancid. Of course, freshly milling wheat berries yourself gives you all the benefits. Wheat berries keep indefinitely, and I mill flour as I need it. And truly fresh bread needs nothing but flour, salt, yeast and water, the four ingredients to which French bakers are limited by law for bread.
Wonder bread $2, bread maker $125 (Amazon). Almost as bad as me getting those tiny drawer sets to organize the spare screws jar. Screws when I need them $2, 64 drawer cabinet $150.
I was fed only Wonder Bread, no other kind, by my mom. It was often stale. We had 4 people in the house, so I don’t know how it got stale. She bought a new loaf every week.
I had a relative who worked for one of those mass production type bakeries decades ago. As such, I had a chance to see the facility in operation a time or two. If you saw the ingredients that went into low grade white bread, you’d swear off of it permanently.

I buy several loaves of bread at a time and put them in the freezer until I need them and they’re nice and fresh when they thaw…
