I once had a panhandler in New York approach me for money with the plea, that he was taking up a collection to purchase a hatchet , with which, he could kill his mother-in-law. Of course, I donated !

You have to be careful with even so-called legitimate charities where millions are collected and hundreds actually get spent on what the charity is supposed to be doing. The rest is spent on advertising, soliciting and directors’ salaries.
