Frank and Ernest by Thaves for January 03, 2016
Transcript:
Backstage at the Globe Theater Actor: I'm going to practice my soliloquy one more time. To be or not to be, that is the question....whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune... Frank: Excuse me, it's show time! Actress: Break a leg! Actor: You too! Frank: I guess you can't make a "Hamlet" without breaking a few legs.

If the explanation about ‘break a leg’ is true, that explains the strange saying of actors. Whether or not, it is fascinating.

An alternate explanation that I had heard (and made sense to me) was that at the end of the play when the actors go out on stage and if the audience liked their performance they would take a bow. In taking the bow you need to bend the knee which is also breaking the leg.

Same problem with the Godfather.

“Break a leg” is to foil the Evil Eye, who will assume the target already has enough trouble and pass by. “Daft as a brush…”
