Nice, succinct wrap-up, thanks. JPP was just being stupid, not really jerkish. Likewise, Manziel is being immature and stupid, like the kid he is, rather than trying to be a jerk. Can’t remember all the details, but there were extenuating circumstances surrounding the photog on the Segway that accounted for his presence, as opposed to him really being a jerk. Totally missed the Rajon Rondo incident. In the Enemkpali/Geno Smith tiff, you could also add Rex Ryan as a potential SJOY for naming Enemkpali a captain when his new team (the Bills) played against his former team (the Jets). NASCAR does seem ripe for an SJOY nod, for any number of “overly enthusiastic” drivers. I suppose Deflategate could provide the winner, but the behavior in question had less than nothing to do with the outcome of the game.Really, in the final analysis, I’m torn between Odell Beckham and Sepp Blatter. The latter ran a corrupt enterprise pretending to be an exemplar of good sportsmanship. The former tried to end the career, if not the life, of an opposing player. Those are pretty high bars to get over for any other would-be SJOY.
I think that Belicheck deserves it for his attitude that rules only matter if 1) you get caught, and 2) there are repercussions. Deflategate was only one example.
Using your excellent logic then Sepp Blatter is the deserving dork. He ignored ethics, sport rules and law on an international scale. He sullied the The Beautiful Game. The only nominees who can compete with Sepp Blatter are those who committed or intended career-ending physical harm. 2015 was a very good year for the SJOTY Award.
Late-breaking Johnny Manziel news: he may or may not have physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend. (I’d bet he did and doesn’t remember doing it, on account of the blackouts……)
for jerkishness committed this year I might have to give Manziel the vote. Guys like Blatter and Pete Rose need a special Lifetime Loathsome award. deflategate is totally over with, but Goodell, Brady, Kraft and Belichek are all such hateable guys that I always look for a reason to vote for them.
Don’t forget that bit here in Texas where a high school football coach ordered two players to tackle the ref after the ref supposedly shot off some racial slurs.

To Bill Hinds: Get a better proofreader. You misspelled “cameraman”.But that’s not SJOTY material.

I still vote Goodell for not being able to run his organization from deflategate, bad referees, LA relocations, you name it.

Pete Rose should retire the award. It should be named after him for decades of ultimate jerkiness. Fool!
