Love the intercultural touch of the strip these days, but the syndicate is transliterating the Spanish. The Hartford Courant has little Yolanda saying “Quiero vivar. . .”, the translation of"Aha! So you CAN speak!" as "Aha! Para que pueda hablar! and “muñeco de nieve” as mun̈eco de nieve." What gives? or in the spirit of the week’s strip: ¿qué pasa?

So Esperanza means Hope? I knew that L’Esperance is French for The Hope. About 30 years ago, L’Esperance quintuplets were born, with the headline, “It’s a boy! And four girls!”

Not sure if Esperanza is her last name. Remember that in Spanish speaking countries, people tend to have four names, and use both their parents’ last names. So Ruiz may still be the one she uses as a surname.

She started young! (I wonder if this is why she objects to the idea of being a commissioner.)
