40000 light years barely gets out of the Milky Way!

Photos like that are best seen on a desktop computer monitor.

I think she’s referring to the hi-res pic of M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, released earlier this month. It’s 6000 × 1918 px. It’s not 40,000 light years AWAY (more like 2.5 million ly), but the part of the galaxy included in the pic (they didn’t get it all) stretches over about 40,000 ly. By comparison, the Sun and solar system are 25-30,000 light years from the center of our galaxy; and M31 is somewhat larger than ours.A Jumbotron can’t show all the pixels (of course, those aren’t all that high res). There are monitors that exceed 6000 px wide, and you could see everything on those. Oh… and the pic is 1.5 gigapixels.

Oops… my bad. The original image is 70,000 pixels wide. I don’t think there’s a monitor this big…

I want a new phone… One that never tells me to press 1 for English.

Makes me appreciate my stupid phone. It’s a phone. I talk on it — occasionally.

Just go outside on a clear night preferably away from city lights and look UP. Way more fun.
