My son, who is about to turn 21, periodically cleans his room, but this year at college he wrote to me, mentioning that he had been surrounded by slobs so long, it really began to bother him. Now his room is clean, the dishes washed and in the cupboard at the dormitory.
When he comes home, a little mess is tolerated, but he washes his own clothes and clears his own room. The dirty dishes, instead of filling the sink, fill the dishwasher! We have never prompted him on this, only set the example, all his life. He decides what he wants to be.
In this case, I believe Luann is not about to abruptly change and suspect that the creators pattern her standards of neatness on their own experiences. It is a part of Luann’s personality, after all.
New poll up if you missed it: Do you think Luann is still conflicted?

Actually that room is cluttered, but organized clutter. I know from experience that once kids who were messy at home get their own place they often can be incredibly neat. So that might be a possibility too. Why is she running out of the room though? I don’t get it.
Actually, Nancy did tell her that not too long ago. She said that if Luann wanted to start paying rent, Nancy would provide maid service. Otherwise, Luann needed to be responsible for cleaning up after herself!

Why IS It that Most Folks Nowadays NEVER Use Garages for they were Originally Intended for? That is, the Storing of Vehicles, and NOT the Storing a Bunch of JUNK that You KNOW You’ll Never, Ever, EVER, Use Again??
I have known people who are totally organized, others who are totally disorganized, some who do not worry about some clutter in a room while the drawers and other storage locations are well organized for the important things, and some whose homes are always neat looking but whose closets and cupboards threaten life and limb if opened since items are pushed in any which way. None of that has had anything to do with their important capabilities in life, yet everyone in the final three groups is made to feel guilty for not being in the first group, while the ones in the first group are made to feel guilty for what else they miss in life during the time devoted to organization. So, the reality is just that different people are happy with different ways of living, that preferencescan change over time, that when sharing a home people need to use compromise and tolerance, and that in someone’s eyes no matter which group you are in you lose.
. replying to æ²’. sounds right.(I once had a hole in the floor in front of my bed. my brother wanted it fixed. I told him I always remembered to step over it but any burglar would fall through.)
Along the lines of this being a topic in which (except for true extremes on either end) there are no winners and therefore no losers: my hubby just read a tweet where the oldest child paid the middle child to made his bed, and the middle child subcontracted the youngest child to do it. The father said he was not sure who to be proud of or who to be worried about.
Oh, and for those who say hiring someone is a win — perhaps in some ways, but you still have to earn the extra money to do so and you give up some privacy in doing so. Therefore, everyone loses and as a result everyone wins because each of the various takes on neatness and organization have their downsides and upsides.
If i had my druthers we would have way more storage space than items and woukd have wooden or tile floors instead of carpet. Either one minimizes work load compared to the alternative. We apparently have neither in our small home. If all goes well maybe we will eventually have one of those goals. One copes. Hey, we spend a lot less heating or cooling the place, given its size…
I was constantly badgered by my parents to clean up my room. Went off to college and I just had to have everything clean and well organzied. Guess all that nagging paid off!
Out with the old; in with the new. Be it winter clothes or yesterday’s boyfriend. Looks like Lu is adverse to change.*But let’s give Qu a break as well. His parents didn’t invest much time or emotion in him. Now his girlfriend dumps him. He’s got to be having post-traumatic relationship disorder (PTRD).
You know the old saying about clean desks as opposed to messy ones, which is that the genuises have messy desks, while people of little intellectual depth have super neat desks. Maybe that might extend to Luann? At least very intelligent? I still contend that there is order to her mess. If you want a really messy teenage room in comics, check out Jeremy’s in Zits.

Hey, constant brain exercise from dealing w an ever changing maze, and then there is the physical exercise of hurtling over objects. Heck, if she keeps it up maybe she will never get symptomatic dementia since physical and intellectual exercise are good prophylaxis for symptomatic forms in testing. Always that silver lining…). Oh, and having to remember where things are is also good mental exercise. (And here some of us were not realizing how much we were being kind to ourselves…)
Can I just say this? It’s starting to be a little bit embarrassing that Luann still lives at home with her parents. According to the plot, she’s in her second year of college. At least two peers are living in the dorms. Come on!

You’re not a teenager anymore, Luann. So quit still trying to act like one.

Attention to any Moderators who are tempted to lay down the law here as they allegedly did on a ‘toon called ’Alley Oop’
The following is an opinion, not ‘bickering’.
Here is the opinion:
It is a shame that some posters find it laughable to compare Luann’s nose to a pig’s snout.
End of opinion.
