So - did anyone else hear the news that Cathy Guisewite plans to post the final CATHY strip on October 3? Any farewell parties being planned?

So it isn’t an immortal classic of graphic humor. So what? It’s a comic strip, friends. To me, anything that’s a diversion from the latest depressing headlines is all to the good. You could have four blank panels and I’d make glancing at it a daily ritual, if only for that reason. Could be almost like a Zen meditation…. :)

Anybody who’s been doing something for 30 years, like Cathy Guisewite, deserves to retire, or at least repurpose their life. Hail and farewell, Cathy.

I didn’t know that news, thanks for sharing. Unlike some, I will miss this comic, mostly because while Cathy (the character) was intense and took everything to the extreme, Cathy (the creator) was usually spot on and accurately portrayed a lot of us (whether we admit it or not).

It is sad news it is ending but it had a good run, a better run than most comics will ever have. But it is time. Too repetitive and predictable. It would be nice if the old ones were re-ran but not in a FBOFW type way.

    OMG!

    It’s true!

CATHY is ending after 34 years, in October!

I wonder if they will do the re-run thing?

Kab those strips you name have been around for years and years, especialy Blondie and Dagwood. I think that strip began back in the 30’s, anybody? Am I correct on that? And those strips are owned by King Features/Reed Berman syndicate. They won’t show up here.

tired and repetitious. may be fair criticism of Cathy, and i won’t miss it a great deal. still i found it entertaining often enough to keep it when i made my last cut to my reading list. are all of you so harsh in your comments aware that reading any individual comic is not mandatory?? or do you just read so you can complain about them?

Ms Guisewaite put a lot of heart and soul into this strip over the years. I should be 1/20 so talented, based on results. I wish her well in her future endeavours, and offer my thanks for the many laughs.

I agree with all the anti-“Cathy” sentiments above, but I’m still impressed that the ending of a comic strip gets mentioned on a bottom-of-the-screen news-crawl on CNN. This shows how much the strip has entwined itself in the culture and is a testament to the strip’s former glory.

So it is with mixed emotion that I say goodbye to “Cathy” but a sincere “best wishes” to Cathy.

As much as we love to complain and tell Cathy what to do, I’m sorry to see Cathy end.

    Cathy is very likeable.

Miss Guisewite, before October 3rd, I would like to see Cathy kick Irving and the inlaws out onto the street, and get onto a plane with the dogs, and move to some island where she hooks up with some young bodybuilder, as they lay on the beach with little floaty hearts around them, and the sun sets on the strip. Imaginations run wild.

Now how are we going to know every little detail of all the latest trends???

P.S. Blondie is older than dirt, Peanuts is a timeless classic, the best comic strip in history, and you people here complaining about Cathy, who say foolish things like abolish Peanuts and run “new” strips like Blondie are why I had to stop reading comments. It makes me ill to think you can actually vote in elections.

The critics here sound like the person who hits his head with a hammer because it feels good when he stops. Why do you torture yourselves? There are lots of strips I consider inane so I skip them. I’m no masochist.

Cathy (both of you) happy trails to your next endeavor. I have appreciated your perspective on daily life humor and especially Cathy and Irv’s neuroses. Good luck.

To Ms. Guisewite, best of luck in all future endeavors, and thank you for 34 years of work. I agree with the folks who feel that 34 years of commitment to something is worth celebrating!

p.s. MrsLukeSkywalker - I’m with you about Peanuts. I’d also love to see a return of Pogo. ;)

@Webspider – I think the ending will be what many have wondered about for years: the announcement that they’re pregnant. It would leave us to wonder what would have happened next.

NameRedacted: “senior”? Since when is someone in her 30s a “senior”? I’m 56 and I don’t even consider MYSELF a senior, let alone someone Cathy’s age.

And even though Cathy may not have appealed to every woman, there are plenty of us out here that HAVE had times when we thought we were fat (reasonably or not) and HAVE felt insecure. If there weren’t a lot of women feeling that way, this strip would have been gone long ago (and the “Cathy” books wouldn’t have had such good sales).

Now if someone could PLEASE get “Lio” and “Zippy” discontinued….

I agree with those who say that Ms. G should end the strip on a funny note with Cathy and Irving discovering that they are pregnant!

I vote that the last panel of the last strip will be a united Pregnant???!!! ACK !!! :-)

Remember, the last strip is a Sunday Edition, so anything is possible. Just don’t do a long winded Lynn epilogue strip. I felt that was a very flat noted way of ending things.

I haven’t read Cathy that much, but I feel that she is an Icon that deserves our respect. So that is why I am posting here.

34 years is a long time to be in this business.

Well done Cathy Guisewite…..We will miss your wonderful comic strip when it ends.

I feel terrible about losing this comic! As far as I am concerned, even during those times when it is not up to its original level of humor, it is still better than almost all of the would-be contenders. Not much reason to continue to even read comics anymore – with the exceptions of Doonesbury and Non Sequitor. Anything else that is (or was) good is in reruns. I only hope that it was not the often vitriolic comments that are behind the departure, because many of us do not agree with such posters. Very sorry to see it go Ms Guisewite, but wish you all the best!

This is late I don’t know if you will see my comment. I posted late this morning and it was deleted. I said nothing naughty. Just felt Cathy not my style. For our times overspending. I mentioned GC could use fresher ones. I will check tomorrow and see if this is still here. For an artis of a strip to have 35 years of thinking what they do with their character is a wonder, when so many have lost there jobs.

Negative posts were deleted because this is Cathy’s homepage and the strip has been receiving a lot of national attention over the last 48 hours. Rather than leaving negative posts on Cathy’s homepage, mods like me chose to remove them and let Cathy enjoy some time in the sun without the negativity. We felt this was the least we could do for Ms. Guisewite, in honor of her decades of wonderful work.
