@Roberta. You sound like you should go back on your meds. It’s just a cartoon for Pete’s sake. It’s not like the writers are on the White House payroll and thus in a position to actually influence any policy makers.
Roberta, Roberta, Roberta… clearly it takes more of a mental effort to UNDERSTAND irony than to be upset by this. If you really see this comic as war propaganda, rather than the snarky comment on the way governments and corporations operate that it really is, then… well, then I guess you need help.
Apparently literacy does not include the study of literary devices! If any literally inclined individuals take the above cartoon as a literal statement, they need to study linguistics and literature. And instead of waxing eloquent in their inherited euphemisms, should get out of the pretend world of supposed moral indignation!
Its amazing to observer people. Some read the comic and assume that the authors are against them. I read it and laughed thinking the authors were playing on the “absurd”. I thought of the “money grubbing” oil men/women and their thinking that they need anything to make more money – including a war. A war that would most likely make the price of oil go back up. That thinking may be very “real” for some of the oil businesses. I don’t think the authors were advocating a war just making fun of the silly people who do.
Not so sure WWII was about control of oil fields as it was about German competition in certain South American countries. Military historian J.F.C. Fuller was convinced it was about control of the international payments system.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m spending thousands of dollars more a year on other products to stimulate the economy that used to go for fuel. If the price of fuel goes up, seems like that would hurt the economy over all when I transfer that spending back to fuel away from everything else.
When I had TV I used to be able to tell a couple of years ahead of when we were going to be in a war by how many military/war movies and shows they programmed. Along with the movies being made. They’d start showing a whole bunch of them and sure enough 1-2 years later we were sending troops.
The feel of being in armed conflicts got injected into the collective consciousness, Made the fact of it go down easier with the public.
Hollywood/TV being a bastion of liberal ideals is a smoke screen. They are businesses and care only about money.
I read the comics to enjoy some comedic reprieve from my daily grind, but I think this cartoon is stepping beyond the boundary of being funny. There is a line between humor and being borderline offensive. Considering the history or war, and the cost to humanity as a whole, I believe it is a not a subject to joke about (even if it is casual). Most soldiers or anyone who has served wound’t find this cartoon funny.
Actually, I found it humorous because it is true. Be careful what you wish for, though! You may get your wish! Lighten up people. Peter does not want war, he just wants business. Graveyard humor is what I call it!

I really think this is sarcasm – A comment on how our government works! Not really meant to be funny.

You don’t need a war to raise oil prices. Have an annual refinery fire. It works great here in California. Scheduled repairs work almost as well.

“Long live the First Amendment!” ??? In what way is the owners of this web site censoring your remark the same as the government passing a law?

Somebody get Roberta a cup of coffee. Unless, of course, that’s playing into the hands of the international coffee bean cartel.
