Do remember that everyone in NYC needs comfy walking shoes. You will see them worn on the street with all sorts of work clothing, with the pretty pumps carried in a bag or left at the office.

New poll up: Describe your wardrobe

Do you think Luann is still conflicted?1) 29 votes – Yes2) 8 votes – Mmm-maybe3) 5 votes – Other4) 1 vote – NoOther: shes inflicted; Only in what kind of Inner Beauty she has-the good, gooder or goodest?Damn Tiff!; Not really—just emotional; I think all people are conflicted about some issue all the time; It is normal to be sad after a break-up, even when it is obvious that the couple is not currently functional. That is not being conflicted. I would personally love to know the gender split for people who think Luann is conflicted.

So, slinky dresses and foxy heels. Sounds nothing like Luann. Whose trip to New York is this turning out to be?

Guess no one is interested in any sight seeing…

I haven’t been following comments lately, so someone may have proposed this already… and I expect some will have a strong visceral response to the idea… but… What are the chances that in New York Luann will encounter Quill? I mean Q having “seen the light” and given up the great offer he’d earlier accepted in order to track down Luann in the city and woo her back? His mysterioso vanishing act of late just begs for a surprise pop-up return, no? Or would this be more pop-goes-the-weasel?

You choose your bait to correspond with what you hope to catch. I happen to find Bernice’s “crunchy granola neo-hippie” vibe quite appealing.

Unless folks are attending a gala, the NY Philharmonic, or a renowned, upscale restaurant, nice casual is all anyone needs in NYC, anymore. Most don’t even dress Prudence’s way for the theatre.

Late winter weather? Heck, here in Sacramento, we hit near 80 today, and may hit 88 to 89 by Wednesday.^In the Mid Atlantic, we’re going through a couple of weeks where the temps went from 75-80 in the day, to 20s, 30s and 40s at night… – Every couple of years, it seems to alternate. Some springs are straight warm in March/April, some are pretty much in flux, almost “undecided”, even…

“Pru is clearly a control freak.”^If Prudence never had any time in NYC, perhaps it could be so that she was being bossy. – However, perhaps Luann and Bernice are deferring to Prudence, as she is more experienced on the subject of NYC.

6Well, it looks like Bernie is going to go shopping for some flashier clothes to take. Generally, however, I think Bernie’s original plan was a better idea for clothes to take and I tend to think that Luann’s regular clothes would be better to take on this trip as well. Perhaps I am only an old, fuddy-duddy, pipe smoking professor, but heck, when I get to go travel somewhere, I tend to really have the trip be about what I get to do and see. I really tend to dress simply for the weather and comfort in that order. Not that I could ever be one…. but I never try to have my travel wardrobe have me become a “fashion plate” (sputtering and laughter). I am not sure what Pru has in mind for Luann and Bernie on their New York trip, but it seems like Pru at least feels a more “high fashion” profile is necessary. Is she going to guide them to go “clubbing” so they need fancy duds? It will be interesting to see how this shapes up.

Clothing is apropos of where you’re going to visit. If they were going to stand outside and gawk at the buildings like typical tourists, then Bernice is correct in her choices. If, on the other hand, Pru can steer them to some more interesting spots … what would be appropriate for the Guggenheim?

Yes. What do you want to bet that one dress will get used, two tops if she feels pressed, and that both of them will wind up hitting the shops in the city? At least that is if they have more typical tourist experiences, but then again this is not real life, sooooooooooo…

    Hmmmmmm,

Okay, i imagine this: the salesperson is one of those people who heard that silly rumor that native New Yorkers wear a lot of black all the time, so Bernice gets overstocked w black garments. In NYC they find not only that tourists ask her for directions (which makes her proud) but then that everyone dressed that way who they ask for directions is another tourist (which worries her). Someplace (backstage off-off Broadway, or in a club, or elsewhere a group of young NYC women take mercy on Bernice and the bunch of them do garment exchanges in a bathroom or back room, coming out in outfits which each have a bit of black but not an overpowering amount. Later, when they return home Bernice comes back w some wonderfully contrasting pieces like wearing a spring flowers scarf with a biker jacket with pale jeans, ensuring that Tiffany will later have some wardrobe envy.

The one thing the salesperson would have gotten right would be selling Bernice shoes for comfort w style, maybe some Danskos or some such. Mercy on their little 2D feet.

If they stay in a hostel (not sure what those are like in NYC, nor how many there are) there will be some young women who will teach them the versatility of scarves. A small or medium square can be used as a pocket accent, on the neck, in the hair, or as a classic head scarf. A medium rectangular one also works for those uses as well as on a hat or for a belt on someone with a small waist. The ends can be fluffed like a flower. A medium large one of either shape can be tied as several styles of tops, or as a hat, with the rectangular one also working as a sash belt, and large ones of either shape can additionally be tied as skirts. The extra at the waist can be hand pleated and secured with a pretty costume jewelry bow. Scarves pack small.

Garments that layer in flattering ways can be extra useful in Spring and Autumn: cute jackets, shape flattering sweaters, vests, etc. If going for a late sixties look w tight abs and an hourglass figure then a good, light weight knit poncho can also serve as a skirt. Luann could maybe pull that off if she dressed less baggy.

The point is that a young woman can pack mostly for casual wearing but add some items which can change an existing outfit into a dressier one.

I suppose Luann is borrowing Pru’s clothes though I have no idea why Pru brought down so many. She was only planning to stay long enough to supervise the Christmas play. Maybe Pru went nuts and bought a lot of clothes in Pitts for all the occasions we never saw her attending.

Except for the wealthy that is how many in the city have to live, anyway, given the cost of housing and how small so much of it is. So, it woukd be another way to fit in. Many young people sublet portions of apartments and own very little.

Bernice looks like she might fit clothing from pop up sample sales. I bet Pru used them and vintage stores.
