Transcript:
Rat: This university didn't like this comedian's views on religion, so they circulated a petition to stop him from speaking.
Pastis: I thought the answer to speech we didn't like was more more speech. Not the banning the speaker.
Rat: Stop intolerant.

I must be getting old, because I want to smack a lot of college students upside their heads.

Free speech is free, unless you need someone to shut up. Especially goes for certain groups that want only their own versions heard.

It’s freedom of speech as long as you don’t say too much. Here in Canada we have hate speech laws, so no more “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits on classic rock radio stations. Why? Coz there’s a line about a little f*****t with an earring & some make-up. We sure did speculate at the time, were they singing about Billy Idol or Michael Jackson.

“Free speech”, with a speaker’s fee paid from student association funds. The comedians can still say what they like elsewhere, for free or from anyone willing to pay to listen or looking for entertainment. If the students don’t care to pay for someone’s opinion, that’s their choice. Good for them for speaking up.

Universities have pretty much lost their f&#@ing minds.

Good or Bad it must and should be heard. That is how one learns. The problem is to many on campus only want to hear their view and stop others viewpoints, this is not good .

It’s gotten past the point of absurd now. What’s worse is that civil discourse has gone the way of the dodo bird, Mount Vesuvius and, Mount Krakatoa.

Liberals/Democrats/Facists/Sociaists/Communists all believe it is their right to shut down any speech they don’t agree with. They simply don’t believe in the 2nd Amendment.

End Federal aid to education, including the student loan program. Problem solved.

Too many people fail to understand the 1st Amendment only prohibits the gov’t from limiting your speech. It does not affect other people/institutions from limiting speech.
Example: you complain about your boss being a piece of *, and your boss overhears you. You are fired, but it is not a violation of your rights. You said it, but faced repercussions based on that speech.
Likewise, in the military you cannot advocate for a particular political candidate while in uniform. That is a limit based on your job, and appearance. You are free to do so out of uniform, without giving the appearance of gov’t endorsement. If you violate that restriction, you are subject to punishment under UCMJ.
And, USAFMSGT, if you think it is only one side, you are delusional. I specifically remember people being prohibited from protesting a republican president by being attempted to be placed out of view, and the lawsuits filed, based on that restriction.

Of course the university a government institution generally or greatly funded by tax dollars would fall under the 1st amendment even if we agree that universities quit being about the pursuit of knowledge a long time ago.

Rat, more importantly, you should have berated Stephan for failing to issue a trigger warning before making his statement. I feel for all the college students that now need to seek the comfort of a safe room. Also, everyone commenting on this strip should get a trophy for bravely participating in the discussion, no matter how asinine his or her comment.
Dangerbunny, Roger Merritt, I recommend this article: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/thats-not-funny/399335/. DW, I recommend you read http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/11/20/40-of-millennials-ok-with-limiting-speech-offensive-to-minorities/. The poll is directly about supporting GOVERNMENT limitation of free speech.

tolerant = everyone who agrees with meintolerant = everyone elseAND because they fit MY definition of intolerant I can do to them whatever I wish and still be tolerant – at least in politically correct definitions
so therefore with this definition in hand I can do circle arguments all day long INSTEAD OF actually trying to solve a problem or come to some type of compromise that is the best for ALL concerned.
so go most if not all political debates, media coverage, opinion opts etc. etc. etc.

I thought Mallard Fillmore was just being reactionary. Now I’m hearing the the same from the left. Lots of folks are full of it, most of what everyone says is useless. Don’t let it get you down, it only castles burning.

You have the right to free speech, but not to an audience. Some people just don’t deserve the time of day. Ever heard of “no-platforming?”

I know we can’t call them “grammar blanks” anymore, but I’m amazed nobody called Rat on his mistake: the university “didn’t like” followed by “so they circulated a petition.” (Of course, a university is not a person so it can’t like or dislike much of anything……..)

How Orwellian of Rat! Intolerance? Rat has re-defined it to suit the fascist-left agenda of that PC “university”….

Except that if he was going to talk about his religion at his speech, they have every right to say no to that if it’s not a message they want associated with their school. It’s kind of sad that people think that’s censorship…

Quite frankly, a lot of people should be prevented from speaking. And using social media.
