WatchMojo on YouTube has a series of Top Comedic Actors, divided by decade (with an “overall” topic as well). I loved almost all of them in the ‘70s & ’80s (although I did NOT think that Eddie Murphy deserved #1), but didn’t like 1/2 of the ones in the ‘90s & ’00s…and didn’t bother watching current decade.
Louis C.K. is really popular with young people right now. I’ve never found him particularly clever. He’s funny at times, but when he’s not funny he is REALLY not funny. Jeff Dunham used to be popular, but he’s only funny 10-20% of the time and I think people started to realize that.
I miss John Pinette a lot. He had great timing and reactions. Robin Williams was frantic, but funny. Carlin never really made me laugh, but he was amusing and insightful at times. My all-time favorites are Victor Borge and Brian Regan.
My favorite is the late great Redd Foxx. To this day both Sanford and Son and its sequel Sanford have me roaring with laughter. I have the former in its entirety on DVD and would like to find the latter. I’d like to share one of his stand up jokes but I can’t. This exchange between Fred and Lamont in the season 6 episode Fred Meets Redd explains why.“Lamont: I wonder why he spells his name like that.Fred: Well, I saw his nightclub act once and (grinning) I don’t know why he’s got those two Ds but I know why he’s got all them Xs!" (grins even wider)Here’s a quote from the aforementioned Eddie Murphy paying tribute to Redd Foxx. It’s from the movie Metro in which Murphy plays hostage negotiator Scott Roper. When Roper says the following his car has been towed and the San Francisco Police Department has just given him a red Ford truck that looks exactly like the one from Sanford and Son. Upon seeing the truck Roper says:Aww, come on man! Who am I? Redd Foxx? I can’t roll in that!

A matter of taste but I did not find Louis C.K. funny at all. Just silly and lowly. Leslie Nielsen, on the other hand…

I remember seeing Rodney Dangerfield on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He had me laughing so hard, I had trouble breathing.

OK, I know I don’t think the same way as most people, but for me it’s a toss-up between Mark Twain and Will Rogers.
