Irregardless is in fact an accepted word, having been around for a couple hundred years at least, and having been used by respected writers for nearly as long as it’s been around. Merriam-Webster has a pretty good article on its history. It takes a pedant to object to it at at this point, and an ill-educated pedant, at that.
There are many words that are not formal or used in polite company. Remember that the goal of words is to communicate ideas and or feelings, first and following the strict rules of grammar is a very distant second. Saying %&#@@ communicates that I am very unhappy with little room for misunderstanding.

Irregardless leaves some people feeling irregular. Turns them into hen wetters.

Amazingly, this ’toon predates and predicts what passes for normal dialogue in social media today.

I have to squirt some of our hens when they decide to forage in the garden, I can attest that they do, indeed get mad, very mad.

All that and Gorbachev was fairly true to his word, or at least got out before breaking it.
