It’s a colony/family, where all the workers are children of the queen(s). Some species have one queen per colony, some have multiple queens. The queens don’t control anything except producing more ants. Individual ants can rarely survive alone.

In my distant youth, I used to enjoy stomping an ant hill, just to see the little buggers go into a frenzy and set about repairing it. Later, I was shamed by a girl into refraining from such violence.(There is no point to this revelation.)
