Update on Joy – when I got home from the library on Saturday after doing my “comics thing” here, I had a message on my answering machine from the vet. Joy’s culture didn’t “grow”. I don’t remember exactly what he was looking for to “grow”, but anyway, the non-growth showed that she would benefit from being on an antibiotic. If I could get there before noon, I could pick it up that day. Otherwise, I’d have to wait until today to get it. Well, the vet is about 15 minutes away (there area couple vets closer, but I chose to use this vet because he gave me a FANTASTIC deal last year when I had 6 girl cats who needed to be spayed. He did all 6 for $600 and threw in the feline virus vaccines at no added charge. Also no office call charge. All the other vets wanted around $145 per cat and vaccines not included. Plus there was an office call charge from each of those.
Anyway, I did have to work that day too, but I wanted her to start the medicine ASAP, so jumped in the car, raced to the vet and got her medicine, then raced back home, gave the medicine to Joy (Clavamox), stuck the bottle in the fridge, packed a lunch for work, grabbed a quick bite and took off for work. The vet also gave me pills for Joy that are supposed to reduce her urge to urinate so often so she isn’t straining so much.
Actually, the other day when I said she had stones, what I meant to say was that she had crystals. The vet gave be several pamphlets about cats’ urinary health and there was something interesting in one of them that said struvite crystals (which Joy has) are most common in Siamese cats. Joy’s mom is a white cat with gray spots but she has Siamese markings and coloring so Daddy must be Siamese. It also said that urinary stones in general are most common in Persian, Himalayan and Russian Blue cats and calcium oxalate stones are more common in Persian, Himalayan and Burmese.
She seems to be doing better already. Thank you to everyone for your advice & comments.
One more comment…Years ago, I guess it was mid 1970’s, I had another cat with crystals. The vet then suggested we could feed her C/D or we could feed canned cat food that was low in ash. He said we could feed her Friskies canned food in the turkey and giblets or beef and liver flavors. Those were lower in ash than the others .Last time I looked, the ash content in those flavors was 3%, while others are 3.5%. I thought that the ash content in those 2 flavors back then was 2.5%, but I could be wrong. Anyway, Princess did very well on those flavors of cat food and never redeveloped the crystals. I’m wondering if I could get away with feeding Joy canned food (low ash) and not spend the money on the C/D. She likes the C/D, but doesn’t like being isolated and she doesn’t eat as well when she’s shut off from the rest of the cats.
Love the movie posters and the great play on movie names :-) I’m with the round is a shape cat though I wish I was a little less round.
Was refilling the hummingbird feeder and left the door ajar by accident so Dean wandered out on the deck. I yelled at him to get his furry bum back inside and he actually came in. I was gobsmacked, never had an obedient cat before though he likely never listen to me again :-)
Wow…..so many movies, so little time. Thanks, JP Steve for clueing me in to the movie deluge here. I didn’t see this one, although I might have missed it, and if I did, apologies!
