Someone inquired in the last week or two if Nancy ever wore glasses, and I replied that I had only seen her wearing glasses for reading or close work. Here she is in glasses.

Will she be back in the same art class with Professor Zebo, Jacques and Cyclops? Or will we see her begin a new school year with one class and teacher, even if it’s not Zebo? Will she have the same two classmates in a completely different class?

Or will Monday bring us a new arc, possibly addressing the issue of why Mr. Grey wanted Frank and Nancy to hire Les? Does Uncle Al know his nephew is a crook? How long has he known?

Will we, instead, be treated to more immature, unrealistic expectations and self-deception from Bernice and Gunther, with Piro and Tiffany as props?

Perhaps we can watch TJ and Shannon (who was not left in the car) demol— uh, remodeling the house formerly owned by Mrs. Horner. It occurs to me that even TJ has a role to play in giving Shannon a father figure to relate to.

    We’ll see.

Dear Luann: You’ve been in college for three years now at least. Why do you still live at home with your parents and when will you start resembling a realistic young adult? You SHOULD be 21 now. How about drinking wine with Bernice sometime? How about losing your virginity and starting birth control pills?

One of the things that is attractive about Luann is her tendency to be unorganized, klutzy, overly romantic, indecisive, basically very human. This human foible Sunday strip shows that in a very funny way, and it should be looked at as a humorous comment on human foibles, in this case those that come up with start of school in Fall. As a community college teacher I can’t tell you how many students sit in my class in the first week and are not sure which book they are supposed to have. Many times by the end they are getting A’s and B’s. One other point: those who are taking Luannverse time as literally concurrent with real world time are totally wrong. First this is Luannverse. Second, just because the strip is shown on Sunday does not mean that the events depicted are supposed to happen on a particular day, including a Sunday. Please, and regular commentators do this all the time, have fun with the strip, know the difference between Luannverse fantas, but don’t obsess on literal comparisons between what the strip happens to draw on a particular day, and real life. This is an escape from real life, just like a movie, or a novel, or a play, or a musical event. It relates to real life because it comments on human foibles, and has great story and character development. There goes the philosophy 101, and psychology 101 Suzie (lol).

The imbedded marketing in a freebie puzzle, Crystal Caverns, got me thinking today about who likes LUANN vs who complains, and wondering if i am seeing a POSSIBLE targeting overlap between the strip and the game.I am going to be longwinded to be clear. Scroll if novel ideas do not appeal, or your time is very short.Okay, i will try to explain. Marketing/advertising/PR are a set i got a bit interested in decades ago when i donated time as the PR person for a very large science fair competition in my state. It overlaps with sales skills and my first career was in sales and sales management so i had a foundation to fall back on, and could learn more about each from books and by asking people questions after i studied on my own (and it was sometimes surprising who took the time to answer my physical letters). As a result, i am VERY aware that when done right for maximum impact per investment, marketing is carefully targeted rather than shotgun or cold call. It is similar to the difference between being a good sales person vs being a sales clerk.CC, as a game is somewhat like the first two iterations of Frozen Bubbles before that was made too easy by the inclusion of a sightline. Differences include blocking pieces, more colors (which is my biggest problem some days since the pink, amber, and paler orange look too similar w a brown cataract), more puzzles in total (150 rather than 100 for FB1 or 101 for FB2), and the puzzles are separated by difficulty. The easy puzzles require more in the way of reflexes than careful thought. In the medium puzzles there is more simultaneous pattern recognition. The hard puzzles can sometimes be very hard, requiring multiple plays to get right. For those a person absolutely needs to strategize at the same time as using tactics, needs speed in many parts, has to remember some critical mistakes as well as orders of ball colors and patters when retrying, AND often has to wait for the puzzle to drop to a certain point to deliver some strikes properly – so the hard level absolutely requires patience. Basically, the hard level requires many skill sets that tend to have been mastered by most people who are successful in life.Okay, now here is what surprised me. The easy and medium levels are associated w ads for game categories one would expect. Easy is paired with reflexive shoot ’em ups, medium is paired with games that are somewhat harder, but the surprise was at the hard level. At the hard level, with its many required skills in memory, recollection, patience, strategizing, etc. they are marketing basic games for very little kids to grandparents and great-grandparents! That shows careful targeting. They KNOW who will succeed in the hard level and utilize it most. Now, to me, Luann as a story is like the hard level of CC in much of what it requires such asCOMPLEX PATTERN RECOGNITIONTHINKING AHEADFILLING IN WHERE NEEDED IN LOGICAL WAYSRECOLLECTION OF MULTIPLE PATTERNSPATIENCEEtc.Many of us have noticed the high number of Luann readers who are successful in life and the high number who are older.Perhaps, we here, at least among those who enjoy the strip, are utilizing the same expressed skill sets as those marketers are utilizing for sales targeting in CC. Perhaps, too, it exhibits the ways some others may be partly acquiring new skills here (or resisting doing so).

You’d think that after taking the same art class for 4 semesters in a row, she’d have her college schedule down by now. And judging be her parents’ lack of reaction, this level of disorganization has become the norm with her, which means she really needs to start taking a good look at herself. Either that or get used to being fired a lot, as employers don’t really like undependable workers.

She’s an adult now, not a 14-year old. Time to start acting like it.

Mentioning (by some commenters) that it is time for Luann to grow ip and get organized feels humorous in relation to the ones who recently declared that Brad can not possibly be organized for the wedding planning because he was not organized as a teen.

    > She’s an adult now, not a 14-year old. Time to start acting like it.If the characters in this strip acted like 18-year olds, then Bernice would simply talk to Piro instead of trying to get in the same room with him by staging a silent film festival and then trying to keep Tiffany away by arranging a competing showing of Barbarella, all the while trying to arrange a romance between Tiffany and Gunther to keep Tiff away from Piro. The characters have been allowed to move from Fogarty’s classroom to college, but they are required still to act like 14-year olds. The story lines depend on it!

BTW, there are more simple wedding planning lists for free online for people doing their own weddings which give usual leadtimes for things to get done, and for those who need handholding there are more interactived services (with attached costs) from some planners, even some which post free lists, so many probably need extra help or more detailed lists, or both. There was no need for Brad to create the list, most couples getting married in a wedding mill do exactly the opposite. They select among the options given and with the planners’ help add some touches of their own. Costs vary depending on choices.
