I, too, had to turn the knob. And the set was 13 inches wide, and it came on at 5pm and went off at midnight. Not that I was ever allowed to stay up that late. And I had a pet dinosaur.
Post Italy Report: We’’re all back safe and sound. The trip was magnificent. Can’t wait to go back. Thanks again M&D! Now that it’s over I’ll probably start posting photos of the actual people and activities. Alas, most of my own shots were taken with the potential use in my artwork so aren’t extremely interesting at face value. But that’s OK, see because there were 13 people on this trip and nearly all took about a million photos for 18 days. So, I’m no accountant, but by my calculations that is roughly 3.5 trillion photos. I’ll use the best of them. Mean time, here is one shot that’s rather shocking. It’s interesting because when you see the leaning tower of Pizza in person and some photos you don’t realize just how MUCH it leans!
Our very first TV was Black and White. We had it for years till it finally went out!!! We watch Ed Sullivan thru the years and Walt Disney on Sundays. Saw the Beatles for the first time on it!!! Got our first color set in the mid 60s! We still had to turn the dial!!!
When I was young, we had a black and white TV, but even before that, my brother and I got to watch some TV on friends TVs. There was daytime TV in those days, but only 4 channels in Chicago. When a fifth one came along, I was in my teens and that channel was wonderful. No commercials, and some very interesting programs (PBS type) and it finally did become a PBS Channel. Did not get color until I had been married for several years with kids of my own. Did not get a remote until many years after that. My father was a TV repairman and he said that remote controls were not reliable and to always change channels by hand. Years after that, he changed his mind. Those remote controls must have changed in those years to become reliable.

Actually, it’s green tea, and I drink quite a bit of it; the diet version that is…
Trying to remember… oh, now it comes to mind! We had a black one, a white one, a wood-grain one, a couple gray ones, and now the flat ones hanging on the walls are pretty much all black…
We had a black and white Magnavox TV. The first night my folks watched it, they fell asleep (must have been as exciting then as it is now!) and my mum woke up to nothing but raster (static). She thought the set was broken already! I was the remote – “Go change the station for us.”) and I had to go to bed at half-past Milton Berle, when the Texico man came out to do the one and only commercial of the show.
First TV was a black and white Zenith. Only 3 stations (public TV what’s that)? It used vacuum tubes. Every now and then a tube would go bad and my dad would pull them all. We’d drive to the local hardware store to test them and buy a replacement for the bad one. When we got a color TV, that one moved to my bedroom until I got a small portable color TV for my 15th birthday/Christmas present.
I was the remote control as a kid… and we had plenty of channels to choose from (living in the Chicago suburbs). If I recall correctly there were at least 3 or 4 VHF channels and a couple of UHF channels. When we moved to western Colorado (in ‘71) that was reduced to 2 VHF channels (and we were probably lucky to have that) and they were all off the air no later than midnight, don’t recall when they came back on but I remember having to wait on Saturdays when I woke up before the stations did. Despite what some folks say, the good ol’ days weren’t always all that good… 8^)
Yes the TV in moms bedroom was black and white, but the living room TV was in color. There was a total of 6 channels and our antenna was in the garage. I still remember when the TV acted up you would hit it on the side to straighten it out just like the Fonz. Aaaaaaa!

Black and white? Of course. They didn’t come out with color for several more years and we didn’t want to wait.

One old TV I had was so old it had a channel 1. And each channel had its own push button. A Hallicrafters if I remember right.

My daughter"s temper tantrum scream was high frequency enough to change channels on the tv occasionally!

I remember our first “color” TV when I was a kid. It was a DuMont/Emerson, and the first TV show we watched in color as a family was Dean Martin.
Sometimes we had to wait while Dad fiddled with the knobs on the back of the set to get the convergence just right…

As I remember I thought that “Disney’s Wonderful World Of Color” was a scam. I mean black, white and gray. Come on!
