Oh, I’m not liking how Nancy is saying that at the final panel.

It is fitting that Nancy is a ‘woman in black’ in today’s strip. In the last panel, between the look on her face and the visual metaphor of the ice cubes sinking to the bottom of the glass, it is as if Nancy is saying that if Toni messes Brad over and breaks his heart, she might end up visiting the bottom of the Pitts River.

Frank, being male, would favor his daughter Luann and be more concerned about her, at least I would be if I had kids.

People are reacting too rashly to Nancy’s comment. There is not a mother in the same situation who would not feel the same way. Especially a secret “tiger” mom. Nancy is not the Asian idea of a tiger mom, strictly regulating her children’s lives to achieve great educational and life results, but a tiger mom protecting her cubs if she feels someone who can get into the deepest part of their being, a wife, does something, I think intentionally, to hurt their hearts. Toni is never going to do that, and I remember at the time (we get so emotionally into this stupid strip -:) this whole event occurred with Toni and Brad,and Dirk, and after, that I actually disliked Nancy, and her reaction to Toni after Brad basically risked his life to protect Toni. But I realize on reflection the true drama of the moment and why a mom would and could feel that way. Her heart was hurt as was that of her her son. Those of you who have never felt that way, well all I can say is that it hurts, and I know as a father, but I could never know as a mother does. But don’t worry, GE is not building us up for that kind of thing to happen, although admittedly the drama leading up to a wedding can be major. Some commentators have said “this is just a wedding.” That is not perceptive. In a family of love where there is tremendous ownership of that love with the parents for children, and Nancy and Frank are the embodiment of that, a wedding is never “just a wedding.” Remember a mom is a tigress. She protects her young. So Nancy is just being a mom. Toni is just going to be a wife, and Brad will have her as his most important woman, but his mom will always be the tigress.

Nancy’s a “Mama Bear”…don’t mess with her son! :) So, even though it seems Nancy and Toni are now getting along fabulously, there’s still that nagging “what if” going on in the back of Nancy’s mind. She needs to cool it…Brad is an adult now, and he needs to deal with Toni on his own terms, not his Mom’s. Nancy needs to set aside those “what if” thoughts and resolve not to interfere in Brad and Toni’s relationship. Think but don’t act, Nancy! (Says a “Mama Bear” herself). =-O

I’m surprised Frank and Nancy haven’t had this conversation until now…

What is she going to do about it? Toni is a firefighter and half her age. She can knock Mommy on her keister. Brad is a grown man and all they can do is stand by their son and hope he’s made the right choice. No marriage is perfect and they’re going to hurt each other at times. It’s inevitable.

Nancy’s comment keeps the suspense going. The living situation (with TJ?) along with Brad’s frequent myopia is bound to add thorns to future arcs. You never know – maybe Gunther & Tiff will get married and have kids (odds are 1%).

Nancy is really saying “I am retracting my claws…for NOW!”

Hmm. From Nancy’s threatening demeanor today, if I were Frank I’d be glad that I was still alive after (I’m estimating) twenty-some years of marriage to Nancy. But I think Toni will survive and will get along with her mother-in-law as well as can be expected. And vice versa….

Is this supposed to be the forewarning of an arc to come? Maybe Toni will back out of the wedding and break Brad’s heart? Even if they get back together….Nancy will not totally forgive Toni for such a move and will always harbor some distrust. Hope this doesn’t happen though. I want to see these two married (tired of waiting) and then maybe have a baby.

NO woman is good enough for a mother’s only son. Initially. They don’t keep house right, they don’t cook right, they don’t SOMETHING! Wait til the grand kids come along.

Not that this is the way things will go — Toni and Brad will make a GREAT couple — but it just dawned on me that Nancy’s whole hypothetical scenario from Brad wishing for someone like Toni to his meeting her to taking the wedding vows to honeymoon night to breaking his heart can all be told with Foreigner song titles.

Hmm. This is becoming somewhat Shakespearean in flavor! Mrs. Degroot is the harbinger of portent for some sort of future shake-up that we, the audience can anticipate, I think. At least this is how today reads to me.

Hopefully, it will be just a lot of funny, hi-jinks and temporary misunderstandings…. and not a real blow-up of some sort.

It is interesting that several people have viewed Nancy’s comments as a “Tiger Mom” sort of extreme reaction. For me, personally, I did not read the remarks in that same vein. To me, the remarks seemed more as a story-telling tool by Greg to suggest/prepare us for a surprising plot twist…. namely something may throw a “monkey wrench” into the wedding plans as they now stand.

.

I suspect (and hope) that whatever this potential “monkey wrench” is that it is something short-lived and that in the end (like with all traditional situation comedies like Luann is IMO patterned after) all will be well.

Don’t like the sound of this, hope is not foreshadowing.

Motherhood is one of the chief reasons there is no peace in the world

Interesting day for the imagination. Nancy, dressed like Diana Rigg/Mrs. Peel from the Avengers, has a defiant hand on her hip and admits to having “thawed” as opposed to “warmed Up” in regards to Toni. A thawed object is usually still cold. Maybe Nancy realizes that it will be Toni pulling the strings in this pending marriage, and fears for her son.

I guess I thought that Nancy intended this as a mildly humorous disguise for a deep caring about her son, without a hint of anything sinister or ominous.

This is just the beginning of Nancy and Toni’s bond… it’ll go deeper than many people realize now. I hate when a storyline sets up for tragedy. Besides, it’s nearly a impossibility not to see it coming for miles.

Toni didn’t exactly break Brad’s heart. What Nancy didn’t know was Brad inserted himself between Toni and Dirk uninvited. He saw Toni and decided he wanted her. Then he saw Dirk and figured he was a dick and did not deserve Toni. At the time, Toni did not see the way Brad did. She was fine with Dirk and resented Brad’s attempts at conversations. Toni never had any intentions or interest in Brad and her actions were loud and clear. THEN Dirk saw Brad with Toni and went all jealous and rage and rammed his car into Brad’s. That was when Toni started to see things differently and how that spilled into their lives as well. Slowly but surely Toni disengaged herself from Dirk but continued to live alone and saw Brad only at their EMS classes. Dirk became raged at Toni’s disengagement and went after Brad. I vaguely recall him hitting Toni also. Eventually Dirk went to jail for assault. That freed Brad and Toni to begin dating. Toni resisted dating at first. If that is what engraged Nancy, then she was being silly. She didn’t know the full story of what Toni went through and it was quite natural that Toni did not want to date other guys, that she didn’t trust her own judgment after Dirk. She should have told Brad to wait and let Toni heal and just be her friend until she was ready. Instead, she went cold on Toni because she wouldn’t date Brad and used to date Dirk. What part of “used” did Nancy not get? Nancy simply had no business being cold to Toni. Unless she thought pretty girls are too good to be true for Brad and are users and dumpers. Back then, people did not believe Toni, a gorgeous woman, would actually go for a doofus like Brad so it was probably one of reasons Nancy did not trust Toni.

Sorry guys, but I just don’t see this as a “portent” of anything. Too many conspiracy theories abounding!

That’s going to be a fun bachelorette party considering your to be mother in law is going to put it on. I can imagine it, juice boxes, pin the tail on the donkey, you know good wholesome non bachelorette fun that Luann and co can participate in,

After the wedding, Toni will introduce Brad to Advanced Obedience Training school. She already treats him like a dog and Nancy can sense it. Tiffany actually shows more thoughtfulness toward Gunther and “wants to see him happy.” Toni uses Brad as a wedding planner and babysitter for Shannon.
