Poor Captain

“Ol Smiley just spent the $30 the Captain saved on two pizzas.

So will it be Toni DeGroot-Daytona?
blunebottle about 8 years ago
Nothing like piling on insult after insult! Poor Brad!
Sir Ruddy Blighter about 8 years ago
Shouldn’t they have waited for the actual wedding to arrogantly change Toni’s uniform?Shouldn’t they have shown her the courtesy of actually ASKING her?
SactoSylvia about 8 years ago
Brad himself suggested that “Daytona” was preferable to “de Groot” – in fact he considered adopting "Daytona as his last name… so I’m guessing the “no-brainer” comment isn’t bothering him.
kenhense about 8 years ago
All this camaraderie without alcohol? (I know – the elementary school might catch fire in five minutes – they gotta be ready). All this to say, “De Groot” sucks. Evans – Why’d you do this to Brad & his nice family?
dadoctah about 8 years ago
Dropping a maiden name is a respected tradition in the world of comics. Sure, “Blondie Bumstead” isn’t the greatest name to have to switch to, but it’s still worlds better than her maiden name of “Blondie Boopadoop”.

It’s nice getting to know the guys at the department. Brad certainly found a place he can fit in.
Tyge about 8 years ago
Some would take it that keeping a maiden name is akin to the wife keeping her running shoes under the marital bed. (To make a quick get away if the going gets rough.) Toni has issues with planning her own wedding, being responsible for her niece, and accepting traditional name changes. Her character as a toon is difficult to read. The LuAnn strip has a rep for being “edgy”; I wonder where Greg E. is going with this.
upanddown17 about 8 years ago
No reflection on Toni, but my wife says she’s proud to carry my surname.
luann1212 about 8 years ago
Its a firehouse, and given the nature of firehouses what these guys are doing is very loving and totally not surprising. Again I remind all these guys would save one’s life in a heartbeat. It’s interesting they love and respect both Brad and Toni, even with the “sig” on the DeGroot name as compared to Daytona by the “brother” but again I point out that razzing each other is a common thing. Plus keep in mind Toni is the one female, a babe at that, who is a firefighter herself in an all-male house. That is amazing, but great!

If and when I get married, I’ll be keeping my own name, or we will come up with a name that we BOTH will change to. He’s marrying me, not adopting me.

My wife didn’t change her name. We both thought it was a hassle and that her name goes with her personality.
Schrodinger's Dog about 8 years ago
but what name do the kids then use?a whole can of worms explaining to them why their name is different than one parent or the other.A FAMILY should have one name.
Willywise52 Premium Member about 8 years ago
I agree,Dog.But look around you.Half the families use different names already.Way of the world.

I know a woman who kept her married name after her divorce because she liked it better than her maiden name.
Chrystos B Minot Premium Member about 8 years ago
My wife kept her last name for professional reasons (name branding is important when you’re self employed). We’ve been married almost 20 years now….. We’re still crazy — af-ter all – these years…! Go Toni !
Furd1 about 8 years ago
It was forty years ago (next month) that I got married and way back then I thought that women changing their name was an archaic tradition. To me it signifies that the woman is the property of the man, something I find abhorrent.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
My son-in-law took my last name, much to his dad’s chagrin.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
Brad and Toni should adopt the attractive last name, Degrona
SukieCrandall Premium Member about 8 years ago
Frank, if i were in Kym’s shoes I would find being the subject of your repeated out of the blue focus to be starting to get creepy. I doubt you have realized that, but it feels different on the other side.
Schrodinger's Dog about 8 years ago
WE ARE DEGROOT !!!( allusions to big tree-guy).
rimshot22 about 8 years ago
“Smiley” is obviously from another comic strip, just like the wedding dress salesperson was from “Cathy.” Does anyone know what strip he comes from?
ironman01 about 8 years ago
The world needs Toni Daytona.
locake about 8 years ago
I’m sure any firefighter would have to request a name change on their coat.
Mordock999 Premium Member about 8 years ago
So. THIS is “Snappy Banter” among Firefighters, eh?
Interesting.
Just Wondering: Do these Jokers work at Toni’s Precinct?
Because if so, I’m VERY Surprised that at least ONE of these guys, particularly Loud-Mouth here, hasn’t “Strayed” into “Harassment Territory”…..,
kaffekup about 8 years ago
About 30 years ago, I knew a woman who legally changed her last name to her middle name, so she did not in fact have any man’s name. Unfortunately, she spent a lot of money and was always trying to land a rich guy to bail her out.
rimshot22 about 8 years ago
My wife kept her maiden name for professional purposes but hyphenated it to both hers and mine for private purposes. It’s worked out fine for over 40 years.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
If somehow Toni’s people held a family reunion, we might see the Daytona 500.And if she wants 500 relatives instantly, she just needs to sign up with the Genetics corporation 23andme
Maizing about 8 years ago
One of my sisters doesn’t like our family name, so she got a legal name change to a last name that she does like.

Why does pizza guy reminds me of hair?
Airman about 8 years ago
Toni definitely will run this household. Honor your parents and show your love sick puppy dog, Brad where his place is.
Sisyphos about 8 years ago
Don’t know what’s come over me, but I’ve got to go along with the Loudmouth on this one. I think investment in two fresh pizzas is much preferable to a new desk caddy for the captain….
Tha_Hype about 8 years ago
Why not just hyphenate it? Daytona-DeGroot?
JPuzzleWhiz about 8 years ago
I know this has nothing to do with the strip, but I gotta impart this late-breaking news:
THE CUBS HAVE WON THE PENNANT!!!
Michie Z Premium Member about 8 years ago
that one guy (“Satchel”, “Smiley”)’s got a bad case of torticollis or something !
Airman about 8 years ago
I should not say anything negative about this long prelude to their wedding. It has probably lasted longer than the marriage will anyway.
mjb515 about 8 years ago
It is not as if Toni’s parent’s had a son to carry on the family name…or at least one who was worth anything.
booga about 8 years ago
She’s a sweetheart of a woman. I hope she gets a chance to be that sweetheart of a mother.
howtheduck about 8 years ago
Oh, so that’s the reason why she’s keeping her last name. The dead parents. You keep believing Brad. If she’d married Dirk, she would have changed her last name in a shot.
